    Window catching

Luke, does the top hinge stay in the pictured position if you try and pull it towards the centre of the opening(does the sliding lockout work effectively) Can you try and get pictures of the top and bottom of the moving part of the window frame, to see if the hinge is still well mounted there?

Anyway to repair this Power washer cable? (photos)

Disagree, the braiding resists the pressure and appears in good condition but should be covered up so it doesn’t become damaged. The outer casing is to protect the braiding

House price gravy train may have hit the buffers

But equally, it’s not paid you as much as it looks when factoring in all the other things that rose over 15 years, including the cost of the place you moved to? Ah but apparently paying off their debts is what poor people do. Rich people find other people to pay off their debts. Now there’s a...

Anyway to repair this Power washer cable? (photos)

Mmm, I really think that photo of the black thing with the missing chunks showing the white thing is the high pressure water hose. It bears the text “max 60*C” which is typical for a jet hose: Anyhoos: That there with the white showing is more likely to have been damaged by lying on an...

    Setting out blockwork from foundation

On the context of a garden room, I’d be unconcerned about skipping it and just putting the insulation on the dpm on the well compacted base and liquid screeding it If you’ve already dug out for the level, crack on; it’s not a huge expense of concrete, it’s just work shovelling 3 tons of it...

Ok to spray paint on cables?

“Don’t use things; some other things, some where, can cause some things to happen to them, so perhaps other other things else elsewhere can also cause things to happen” Mmm. Definitely a useful mantra

Sensible policies: Smoking banned for life

Are there really people that foolish? Because they aren’t enough already? The proportion of a pack of cigarettes that is tax is incredible, no?

Ok to spray paint on cables?

Well, he’s decided to move them, paint, then refit so it’s decided.. But careful; someone might come along with the “you can’t do that” finger wag and say the silicone could cause the plasticisers to leach out I wondered how long it would take you to invoke that. Go do some more research on it...

Ok to spray paint on cables?

Indeed.. a) so coating a PVC cable with something fairly impervious to small molecules like O2 will make it more likely that larger molecules like C24H38O4 will be encouraged to leach out, embrittling the cable? and b) so what?

    Window catching

Some hinges have a button you can press to slide the whole window towards the centre of the opening by some inches for cleaning from inside the property. Check your top hinge hasn’t come unlocked and is causing a tilt. It may just need sliding back and locking in, maybe lubricating or cleaning...

I didn’t understand your point. A large steel beam may enter a hole in a masonry wall and be “proper” plastered around.. But if that large steel beam had, say, a foot-pad welded onto it that was an inch thick then it couldn’t be inserted into the wall pocket and be plastered around in the same way?

Ok to spray paint on cables?

Hah, no.. but I was! :) Spray a test batch or on an offcut of cable. I think it highly likely nothing bad will happen; if you dug into it you’d probably find that the aerosol nozzle / stem of the spray can is also PVC, which would be a poor thing to make a nozzle from if the paint attacked it...
