    MacBook reformat

Thanks a lot of that @foxhole, sounds like it will do exactly what I need. I figured I'd need a copy of the OS (as a .dmg) to mount onto a drive and install from, but this option seems to install a fresh copy, presumably from online? As long as everything is formatted and installed fresh I'm happy.

    CORRUPTION IN UKRAINE

There is a history of corruption in Ukraine (as there is in any country I suppose), but the war with Russia seems to have brushed lots of it under the carpet and the current psyche/mood forbids any discussion on Ukraine deemed negative. There were tens of billions of USD provided as loans to...

    MacBook reformat

Thanks for all the pointers all. Think I'll need to boot up into a mode where I can erase the drive (think it might be via Utilities), as per @richw 's suggestion. The latest OS supported by this Mac is Monterey (Ventura is supported on 2017 models and above). It runs well enough so I'll...

    MacBook reformat

For a laugh I thought I'd check the system preferences panel, and I can see an 'erase all content and settings' feature. I wanted to completely reformat the drive and wonder if they erase function would just erase personal data rather than the actual system files.

    MacBook reformat

Can anybody tell me how to reformat a MacBook (early 2015) and install a fresh copy of Mac OS on it? We've had it from new and it still does everything we need from it, but it's started to slow down. I replaced the screen on it only three years ago so would rather it keep going for as long as...

    Polaroid Cameras

My wife uses Polaroid, but I find them too small and too poor a quality for anything other than little snaps to keep in a box. I use a 1950s Praktica camera and mess about with expired film to get interesting shots. I captured our whole house move on film 7 years ago.

How to deal with the shop lifting crisis in America

I remember swearing at my Dad aged 5 (think I called him a sh*t head as I'd heard the phrase said on TV). He leapt up from his chair, chased me around the house and washed my mouth out with soap and water. I never swore at him again (well, not in my childhood or teenage years...). I'm a strong...

    Wilko may be going bust

I think town centres will revert to having large numbers of people living in them (as it was in the 18th Century) rather than rows and rows of shops. I don't see it as a bad thing, I just see it as an evolutionary change. Town centres are already seeing a growth in entertainment/leisure venues...

    Wilko may be going bust

If they do collapse, I feel for the 12k staff out there. Wilko is one of the few shops I'll go to and buy things from (because I don't like shopping). Always find bits I need at decent prices, and always seems to have plenty of (admittedly older) customers in...

Void under patio - how to fill?

I had the exact same problem. There was an overhang with a small gap underneath it and I was forever worried somebody would step on it and either crack the slab or lift it up. Best solution is to pack it with cement. I did this and left a small lip (maybe 5-10mm) along the edge. When rainwater...

    Weight loss

The only diet which has ever worked for me is calorie counting. The hardest challenge is stopping yourself snacking and training your mind to eat a controlled diet, rather than on impulse. If you record what you eat, calorie count it and stick to a daily limit (can be calculated online) you...

    Artificial Grass Installation

And the longer we do it, the more people I hope we can put off installing the nasty stuff!

    Artificial Grass Installation

You may have already been told this, but I always feel I have to say this at any post regarding artificial grass. Don't do it! What pet is being enclosed? If it's open to the air, real grass provides nesting material for birds, as well as food for them and other living things in the...

    Mass of brambles and bindweed

If you don't fancy using glyphosate, then digging up the roots really is the way forward. When I re-did all my borders, the bindweed roots I found went absolutely everywhere -- long white roots that had laid a network fairly shallow under the soil surface. Ripped them all out and have had none...

    life eh!

Pretty much everything you've said is what I've listened to my wife telling me since she started! I remember during the Covid times, the GPs (at least in our local Trust) refused to do home visits and delegated to the nurses many of their roles. Unsurprisingly many of those roles remain as a...

    life eh!

Said that about nursing! My wife is a fantastic nurse and goes way beyond her job spec every day. Although her course was free, she had to do three years of university first which was not done in the past. She didn't enjoy it and didn't want to be up at night writing dissertations or theorising...

UK to run up highest debt interest bill in developed world

I read last month that a single month's interest payment was something between £8 and £9 billion... that's the same budget we give the Ministry of Justice in funding for an entire year. Still remember the words of Osbourne in 2010 saying he'd eliminate the national deficit by 2015

    life eh!

I still work to provide a vital service (for the NHS) in what I do, but yes I wholeheartedly agree. I think it was Tony Benn who said our economy is based on moving money around for a fee. Trouble is we never remained competitive and what we do make now tends to be niche and specific. My Dad...

    life eh!

One of the biggest regrets in my life is not learning a trade after school. I was part of the generation Tony Blair pushed to go to University. I have a big interest in history, so mentioned this to my teacher at the time and they said "right, get applying for History courses". I enjoyed it...

    Light switching itself on....

Bizarre! I'm sure I remember an old episode of "The Secret Life of Machines" with Tim Hunkin, in which switches were discussed. I don't remember self-activating switches being discussed!
