Making a garden tap HELP please for noob

Shh! Don't cut corners, use the mdpe. It'll radius to about 20 inches (fill it full of hot water to get really tight bends). And, of course, there are right angle joints. Don't use hose. Even the "Heavy duty" stuff won't last long and you'll regret it. The biggest job here is digging the...

inspecting old rads for imminent pinholes or failure

Because towel rails are specced by women for the fashionable look. Efficiency and build quality are rarely considered in the one room where being warm really matters. It's not a british thing by the way, same all over the western world.

    CCTV ideas

Also consider IP cameras and using a computer to record/view. Removes the need for a dedicated recorder, but of course you'll need to have a computer running all the time. Motion detection is very useful, makes reviewing weeks of activity a lot quicker task, but if you're using pan/tilt...

    Extension Ladder Duty Ratings

Indeed. The heavier duty, the longer lasting it will be. Also, on a personal note as I'm now carrying three more stone than I should be, I find narrow treaded ladders absolute murder on my feet for more than a few minutes. The better built ones tend to have wider treads and intended for more...

    Why PAT test?

Not all circuits are RCD protected, and you cannot guarantee the item won't be moved to such a circuit. I work for a charity, and I self-taught myself (with the aid of an online course, dvd and test) and we now have three trained pat testers. It's not difficult, the modern test tools can be...

    Severed Lawn Mower cable

Unless it's worn off, there'll be a plate or sticker on the item itself with the wattage of the motor. Easy conversion to amps once you know that.

Making a garden tap HELP please for noob

Yes, blue mdpe. Hosepipe will go very soft in hot weather, and if under pressure is very likely to come out of the hozelock connectors. The modern fittings for MDPE are very good and very easy to use. The pipe is cheap and once done will last for yonks. It withstands freezing well too.

    Soil pipe fire collar

I've had cause to look into this a bit too, as it's a question I was puzzling over a few years ago. Fitting it between a sheet of plasterboard in a ceiling is not going to be that useful as the plasterboard may fail, and the extra pressure exerted by the intumescent strip expanding may be...

inspecting old rads for imminent pinholes or failure

If you keep an inhibitor in the system, corrosion will be cut down to the absolute minimum. The only time corrosion can happen is when fresh water is introduced carrying oxygen. As for testing - pressure test? Increase pipework pressure to a much higher than normal rate and if there's a...

    Strimmer/Brushcutter

In the pro kit, it shouldn't be possible for the blade to ever reach back far enough to hit your toesie-wosies whilst wearing a proper harness. (Ok, you /can/, but you do have to struggle a bit) DIY stuff, no idea, but I imagine it's a lot easier to do yourself a mischief. If it's just a...

    There's no hiding!

Coincides with: 1. New ways the bad guys find of cheating the system. Ie, panic stops. 2. More litigious injured people and ambulance chasing. Lot of people get whiplash now, genuine or otherwise. 3. Cost of repairs has gone through the roof since they made cars safer. Airbags (ours...

Ideal length of cord for bayonet ceiling light fitting?

With the shift towards CFL's, they won't discolour the ceiling. As someone slightly above the average height, don't put them too low either. Logic suggests no part of the fitting should be below 6'6", same as doorways.

Mountfield Princess lawnmower grass stops the blade rotating

Does the motor stop at the same time as the blade, or continue spinning? Does it have a belt between the motor and the blade? If it does, it needs replacing as it's worn out. Alternatively, there may be some kind of clutch involved to prevent motor damage if you stall the blade, and...

good car for 17 year old new driver

http://www.fancyacar.co.uk/car-insurance/cheapest-cars-to-insure/ Spares costs factor heavily on insurance costs, and jap stuff is expensive that way. That said, so many cars are designed to practically explode at the first decent ding to protect the occupants it's ridiculously easy to...

    Water In Post Hole

I'd be worried! Not about the water itself, but what sort of water is it? Pea shingle isn't usual for a soakaway (although it can be used - but it hasn't rained for a while, why hasn't it soaked away if it is?), but shingle /is/ used extensively to bed pipes, including mains water and sewage...

    Shared soil pipe

Surprised this wasn't pointed out in both surveys. Be polite and give a /reasonable/ timeframe to complete the works, but unless there is a covenant in place (sounds unlikely) then he needs to get his **** outta your house...

    Hot water pressure

Best way to clear the airlock is the old hosepipe between the cold and hot taps with both turned on. One minute and shouldn't need doing again.

    Reclaimed Railway Sleepers - Fireplace

Totally agree with keenedge. Sorry that you've gone so far down this path but you should have done your research earlier. Don't waste any more time, they'll never be suitable, always smell and will probably be carcinogenic too.
