Re-doing electrician's work, cable advice required

Make sure you amend the protective device on the relevant circuit then to take into account the reduced current carrying capacity of the cable you have now fitted. And you will need to ensure that any tests done by your electrician are re-done with your new fixed wiring.

    Door contact for UPVC frame

I've done this to both my upvc doors. Dismantle a normal surface mount contact and carefully solder two very thin wires onto the reed switch. I place this in one of the channels near the bottom of the door frame and drilled at an angle with a narrow drill so the wires appeared behind...

    Shipping Container

Hi, Not sure where would be best to put this so I thought roofing might be worth a shot. I have a shipping container that is used for storage etc (an extension to the overflowing shed). The problem is with the cold roof and condensation as you might expect. Now I thought about...

I can hardly wait! *Joins Matty with some popcorn* (I don't know why I'm bothered I drive a Land Rover - I don't have boots!)

Just post it already! If it's inappropriate then the mods will simply delete it.

    ADSL Speed Info required

H stands for "HSDPA" which is often referred to as 3.5G in that it is a development of the 3G technology and is in theory significantly faster than 3G. Your cameras are compressing the streams themselves if outputting H.264. I'm surprised that you seem to have just the cameras streaming to...

Installing a CCTV system at Home - Advice required please

Generally speaking a hard drive is a hard drive. Yes, server biased SCSI drives are manufactured to a higher standard but in CCTV DVR's are standard SATA hard drives. All a CCTV DVR is inside is a PC running a custom operating system/software usually a flavour of Linux as the base OS. Hard...

    ADSL Speed Info required

True, I should have said most. OpenReach are doing some trials with Fibre to the premises but it's very small scale IIRC. There are fibre to the premises products available now and also Ethernet to the home but they are far from cheap! Virgin are really limited on the upstream side as...

    ADSL Speed Info required

All "Fibre" as it is sold isn't actually fibre to the home. It is FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet) - very briefly the DSLAM is moved from the main exchange which could be many miles away to your local street cabinet. The connection from the cabinet to your home is still the age old copper cabling...

    ADSL Speed Info required

In fact 1meg up is pretty much the limit for the version of ADSL used in the UK and should be more than adequate for viewing IP cameras. Paying extra for a business line really doesn't give you many, if any benefits to be honest. You have a reduced contention ratio although nowadays that is...

    ADSL Speed Info required

Thanks Paul, I am aware of that but given that 95% of routers are unchanged from default then a Draytek (depending on firmware) will be on one of the 4 addresses I provided which for a novice is arguably much faster than working out how to open a command prompt and then deciphering any number...

    ADSL Speed Info required

Nah probably just a new provision or a new fibre product. You haven't enlightened us with what problems you are experiencing with your current line... To get your router stats just open a web browser on your PC and try each of these addresses in turn. http://192.168.1.1...

    hi

Under HASAWA anyone has a responsibility to others even trespassers! It's actually a specific group of people mentioned in guidelines and although most people don't agree with it they must be protected to. Any hazard should be appropriately protected to safeguard others. Now the...

    ADSL Speed Info required

As others have said, it all depends on so many factors that people posting their speeds is pointless. You would need to compare your sync speeds with your actual speeds. There will be some difference due to the overhead of TCP/IP etc but on the whole they should be in the same ballpark...

    Did i get cheated?

Ah but zanzibar you fail to take into account fair wear and tear which is not deductable against a deposit. Now if it is a bodged up mess and not fit for purpose (i.e. fouls the normal opening of a door) then fair wear and tear would arguably include damage caused by said door.

    Did i get cheated?

I would say it's unfair. For starters the fan doesn't appear to have fitted correctly in that it has no fixings obvious. Secondly the fan should not be positioned in such a way that an opening door can interfere with it (from the picture it appears as though the door can touch it quite...

Distributing Sky through amplifier around the house

My thoughts exactly tbh. A few wisps of shielding will have zero (or negligible affect on a UHF signal). I agree it looks untidy and could do with tidying up but don't unnecessarily worry people. The shielding is exaclty that.. it is shielding and as such will be connected to earth so...
