    That would be handy but I might have to wait a while to get someone to come over. But as my torx keys and VW jack are in the boot I might need a few days to get all the bits I need. :)

    Thanks for that. Hopefully I can see the alternator/starter from underneath, and see the wires leading to them. I've got some twin and earth I presume would be ok. Would a car battery charger work in place of a jump pack? I mean the ones you would leave them charging for hours.

    Mottie guessed it and robin. I left the bonnet up. Locked it then shut the bonnet. Won't do that again.

    I saw a couple of videos about that this evening. Air wedge they're called apparently. You have to prize it open a little to start with apparently. I might see if I can in the morning. Not sure what to use as a jemmy though.

    Any idea how much someone might charge for putting in a steel? I'm not sure my insurance company is happy with the customer working on their own house. A very rough guess will do?
