What have you been doing today?

Helping our daughter do a few bits at her new house

What can I use to fill this hole?

Ouch. I don’t think you should bury speedfit fittings but if that were mine, I’d wrap Denso around the pipe and fitting, cover with sand and then concrete on top.

    Shallow depth joists?

Tony, would the maximum span size alter if the joists were for a loft floor? For example if the span was 4.0mtrs but you could never actually walk on 1.5mtrs of it due to a pitched roof?

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

Yes, I said burn the lats and bag the plaster. I’ve treated her to a decent dust mask and some overalls

Which order do you do which jobs when refurbishing?

You want to do all your messy ripping out and structural alterations first, then build it back in layers. So the wires are under the plasterboards so need to go in first, but the actual sockets and switched are ontop of the plaster so need to go in last.

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

I told her if she pulls the old ceiling down I’d put the new one up. For what it will cost it seems a no brainer to me.

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

How did you connect the new joists to the house at the window side of the room? When I did it at my house I went from load bearing wall in the middle to an RSJ just in from the windows. At our daughters I could go onto the wall plate direct and that would lower the ceilings by 16cm to 243cm.

I would clean everything up best you can then watch it while you use all the bathroom services.

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

I’ve got it in my head to rip it all out now. The wall between the 2 bedrooms is made of those hollow blocks and is built up off the floorboards an inch away from a huge joist. If I built a structural stud wall off that joist to the same height as the wall plate, I could span 8x2 between the...

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

That’s close to what I thought when I said about fixing a single 3x2 down each side then hanging the others off straps.

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

I’m just reading Freddie’s link now. I’m thinking I’d struggle with the perimeter because the 2 internal walls are those hollow terracotta blocks which are really weak and the 2 external walls have the angle on them. I want to stay close to that angle so I don’t loose too much head height...

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

So the existing ceilings are like a banana, you can’t tell by looking but as soon as I offer the new ceiling joists up it becomes clear.

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

I don’t understand how that system works.

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

So I could use 3x2 and slide cables in easy. It puts me just under the ceiling curve too:

    Lowering ceiling by 100mm?

Ok, I need some help because I think my method is ****e. Couple of pics: I’ve put a 4x2 block on each existing joist and then attached my new lower 3x2 to that. Problem is, it’s taking ages and I think the ceiling bananas a bit. Instead I’m thinking of screwing a full length of 3x2 to...

    Blockage in 4" waste pipe

Sounds pretty straight forward to me. If I couldn’t get it going downstream I would use a piece rope or rod to pull the jetter head up the junction. Obviously needs CCTV as well.

Soakaway Possibly Blocked, please help !!!

You could always put drain dye in the gully (or whatever you have at the top end) then wait for a downpour.
