    Aerial Help

Thank-you @Diver Fred it is the same where I live in Mid-Wales. Lucky new TV does connect to the internet, and can connect to the Sky dish direct, without using the Sky box. However, the older TV's in the bedrooms, do not have this option, so it needs a set-top box, well set bottom, could...

No, the definition of a circuit means you can have a large final circuit, on one fuse, but for final circuits you can have multiple final circuits on one fuse. OK I have introduced final, so in a factory you can have a distribution board which feeds many other smaller distribution boards, but...

    Plug in solar

Interesting, looking at circuit - An assembly of electrical equipment supplied from the same origin and protected against overcurrent by the same protective device(s). So unless you consider a RCD forms a circuit, then that simply does not make any sense. And to say older installations, one...

I think your spot on, there will be I am sure some homes where they are worthwhile, but 95% of homes, they will not pay for themselves for years, and there are far better options.

How would you clamp meter a ring main ??

Think you have missed my point, in a DB yes you may be able to fit CT clamps, but in a CU no, as not type tested with CT clamps in the CU. And second I have found CT clamps interfere with each other, and should not be close together, they will be too close together inside a consumer unit. So...

How would you clamp meter a ring main ??

I do see the problem, unless the CU is made by Refoss then the clamps need to be outside the board. Seems unlikely the clamps have been used during the type testing. I looked at clamping on my clamp meter, and there simply is not the room, so I clamped around the tails here looking at earth...

    Holes on the hedge

My hedge was never laid, so it will never stop animals, and now a bit late to try. Not sure if I have the skill anyway, I would need to employ someone. Likely it would mean ripping it all out, and starting from scratch.

Sorry it was wrong of me to say that, even if it is true. Though my time as an electrician I have come across many a domestic electrician who has looked at the industrial electricians wages, and tried to jump. To be frank, I did similar, I was an auto electrician to start with, but as an auto...

Yes it is nearly as bad as the trusted trader scams, you can get a guy who joined in 2005 when they started, and he knows very little, then a guy who has continued training and has a master’s degree, they tell him he can't join as he has not got an MVQ or what ever they are called. The problem...

How to open up (old) Bosch drill? Any tips?

Came to look at repairing a drill myself, got the case apart, but it seems no spares available, likely the trigger at fault, but with no spares for the Screwfix/B&Q special, it was a waste of time. I even started to read the instructions, that's what one does when all else fails, they said do...

    Holes on the hedge

My cats can get through some very small gaps, and if you get a badger, there is no stopping them, they will push there way through anything, wild boar I am told are the worst, I really felt sorry for the guy who got them in his garden, lucky not seen any around here. But I like watching the...

    Ofgen appliance use costs.

Does the smart tec help or hinder? I come home at night, and I can select which outside lights I want, or click on all, and come home to a lit drive, once inside the house, hey google turn off outside lights turns them all off again. Before I had PIR lamps which seemed to have a mind of their...

    Aerial Help

Where I live, the Freeview transmitter at Moel-y-sant only transmits non-commercial channels, so step one is the channel you want being broadcast from your transmitter? There is a Freely which works on the internet, no aerial required. And also Freesat which uses a dish, the Freesat has a...

I agree, which is why I will wait, as once there is a mass market the price will go down. No such thing, most electricians will have an area of expertise. Be it how to program a PLC, how to repair an EV, how to work on high voltage, and the list goes on, an auto electrician is still can...

    Ofgen appliance use costs.

On the Falklands the farms would only run the generator twice a day, that was enough to keep chest freezers frozen, the morning run allowed vacuum cleaning and evening run lights and radio, there was no TV. They would have a battery to run the ham radio, which was their phone, and heating was...

    Installing an Earthing Rod

A conductive medium is formed over time, so a 5-year-old earth stake is better than a new one, but also the electrochemical series can cause an earth rod to be eroded and so it needs testing at regular intervals.

I think the debate is looking at the wrong options, G98 or not hardly matters, what matters is grid-tie, or EPS battery. Yes I wonder how I am classed? At least 55 years in the trade, hold a Fdeng degree, a list of exams passed, but I have never been a member of any of the schemes, I was a...

    Installing an Earthing Rod

I was required to get 8Ω for each earth rod, and in the sandy soil at point of Ayr gas terminal I needed 3 to 8 rods at 1.2 meters each, and needed a paddies motorcycle to knock them in. But in most cases one earth rod will show around 60Ω which is well within what is required.
