It’s a very lovely country to visit, Brittany, or the Charente-Maritime region are amazing. Anywhere further South of Bergerac is great but terribly expensive.

Last time I was in Brittany, I went to a place that sold wine by the litre -I took in an empty milk bottle which was filled to the brim with a nice Merlot for about 7 Euros for 2 litres -better than most wines Ive drunk in UK

    Is France better than UK?

I know a few people that have moved to France, some as retirement. Parts of France, Normandy, Brittany, Charente-Maritime for example have thriving expat communities and its possible to buy a large farmhouse for under £200k. I wouldn't say it's better, just different. Parts of France...

    English Cooking

You can’t beat the galettes they do in Brittany. I make them a few times a year here, they use Ble noir flour which is naturally gluten free.

    Will For King?

Whereabouts? A mate of mine bought a house 30 mins drive inland from La Rochelle in the Charente-Maritime region, he found it has a consistent micro climate with sunshine more like the South. I love Brittany, especially the area around Malestroit, but the weather is just like the U.K….rainy.

What have you had for dinner

...you might not expect: beer, oven chips, soy sauce, corn flakes, marmite, loads of things with yeast extract etc etc. I’ve tried loads of recipes to make gluten free bread and they are all pretty awful. On the plus side Galettes that are a traditional meal in Brittany are gluten free and...

    Food Miles

Thanks for that -very interesting when I last visited Brittany -I was amazed that most towns had a market, which had plenty of vegetable, fruit, meat and cheese stalls -and the locals came out in big numbers to buy stuff totally different to UK where we just "do Tescos"

    Buy British

I don't know if it's true of just Brittany but the local towns there all seems to have morning markets...where they have fruit n veg stalls selling loads of fresh, local produce. I esp remember the huge bunches of fresh herbs, salad leaves etc.

    This'll be interesting.

...considering at the time I was regularly importing timber, ironmongery and machinery from EU countries, I also used to travel with my dog to Brittany for holidays. I can tell the light bulb moment: I believed in the idea of U.K. being able to make its own trade deals, but somebody (on this...
