Hi guys, many thanks for all your help it's appreciated; I now know where to replace the disconnected cable but I think after reading all the comments on sheathing and glands, I should get an up to date electrician in to renew the complete cable from tne domestic box, and have it safe for the...

Disconnected cable inside garage fuse box

Hi all, here is 2 better photos of the wiring at the top of the consumer unit. (including my shoes!) I have undone the brown cable and reattached it properly, the missinggrey cable hasn't been reattached in the photos yet, but it should go from the Neutral on the left of the brown cable to the...

Disconnected cable inside garage fuse box

There is no gland etc that I can see, the armoured cable just comes through the old concrete wall about 2 feet from the consumer unit. It has then been stripped down to the inner sheath from there, and then stripped to expose the cables that enter the consumer unit.

Disconnected cable inside garage fuse box

Hi guys, I have a garage fuse box installed a few years back by a qualified electrician with a 3 core cable from the house consumer unit. All has been ok and working as it should until today when I was moving some boxes and inadvertently pulled the 3 core. The 3 core cable has brown, grey and...

    Bathroom switch

Hi Guys, had the bathroom refurb a couple of months ago, including electrics. The bathroom light, and separate fan switch, has been relocated outside the bathroom using a single unit with 2 switches, left switch for light and right switch for fan. It works as it should. My wife hates the...

    Soffits and fascias

thanks opps, just the recommendation I was after. The previous Dulux was watery sh*t to put on, and as stated didn't last anywhere near the 10 year ( not that I expected any claim like that to come true). Only reason I used it was I was given 2x 5tr tins that a family member had recently bought...

    Soffits and fascias

Hi Guys, advice needed again: I'm going to be removing the gutters on the bungalow this year and before putting new stuff up I'm looking to paint the fascias and soffits. Both of these are in excellent condition for a 1930s house and are pine about 3/4 inch thick, one black gloss and the other...

Hotpoint Ultimate S Line 10657J dead

Thanks Harry, it was with a volt stick.. Hotpoint gave a 10 year parts warranty but on calling them they want £150 service charge or (worse than that) 20.50 per month for 12 months for service cover that covers 1 call out......the machine can be bought for £279 so neither is a good bet.

Hotpoint Ultimate S Line 10657J dead

Hi Guys the Hotpoint washer is 18 months old and has had no faults previously. Yesterday it tripped the Fuse box washing machine RCD, and blew the fuse in the machine's plug. I replaced the fuse and flicked the wall socket switch (which I had checked was ok by powering the kettle), and the...

    Upvc windows replacing old mastic

Thanks Kent Mac, that's my worry that I use a 'remover' and then go into a loop trying to clean to a bare prime surface for the new mastic. I like the idea of the mastic masking tape as my mastic gun skills have good days and bad, cheers. I always thought that putting fresh mastic on old...

    Upvc windows replacing old mastic

Hi, as the title says I'm having to re-do all the mastic/silicon round the upvc windows and on the joints of the upvc sills and upv internal finishes. I've taken off the old mastic off with a chisel and stanley blade without damage (what a boring job that was) and need to mastic new stuff in...

    Downpipes and soil pipe

Thanks Guys: Scotts, that had crossed my mind, but I had scraped the rusty bits before doing the walls with masonry paint and figured I was just being a lazy bar steward by not painting them. Job now done with Hammerite. Sparkwright, never heard of that, thanks for the tip I'll keep for the future
