Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Thanks Harry, though that's unwelcome news. The cable goes from the cellar to the 3rd floor/loft of a victorian terrace house. I'm not sure of the length. It runs through stud walls - not buried in plaster.

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

My investigations have revealed that both immersions are on the same 16A radial circuit. The only other thing on that radial circuit appears to be a secondary circulation pump. Does that mean that I must not run both immersions at the same time? And if not, can the circuit be upgraded to 32A...

What pump should I have installed for my hot (and cold?) water taps

Urgh - sounds like it was a bit of a botch job. Definitely no insulation on any of the pipes. No timers, PIR switches or anything like that.

What pump should I have installed for my hot (and cold?) water taps

My unvented system was installed during a whole house renovation 5 or 6 years ago. There are two issues I'd like to address: 1) Hot water circulation on demand 2) Improve shower pressure The hot water system has a circulation 'ring' whereby the hot water can get pumped out of the cylinder...

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

TBH it's an observation based off a only a couple of weeks worth of using the immersion heaters while the gas is broken. So I haven't got enough evidence to be confident about it. Perhaps I just haven't left it for long enough when I'm using just one heater.

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Probably in theory, but in practice, I think that when only 1 is used, it only heats a small volume of water because the local temp in the tank causes that heater's thermostat to turn the heater off. I guess over a *long* period of time, the heat would dissapate through the rest of the tank and...

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

(Edit: Please also see the last post on the previous page for photos as installed.) I think it must be this (or equivalent model from 5 or so years ago) https://www.gledhill.net/products/alternative-energy/stainlesslite-horizontal/:

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Oh! My mistake. Hot water is not tapped from the end - it's taken from the actual top (i.e. the long edge of the cylinder) when the tank is lying down. Harry's request for photos forced me to crawl in there and take a better look. Photos are poor because it's such a tight space. One end...

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Strangely, from one end. It's like a vertical cylinder, but placed on it's side (and designed to be like that, or so I was told by the installer). And from my little experience over the last couple of weeks, the 'sink' immersion heater really does only heat up a little bit of the tank, while the...

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Thanks both. Next step then is to try and determine what CU circuit they're on.

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Thanks John, And just to check (now that more info has been teased out earlier in this thread) - is it still the case that these two immersions really shouldn't be switched on at the same time, and therefore best to be controlled by a dual immersion switch?

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

I'll try and figure that out by turning off stuff at the CU. But as a starter for 10, the feed seems to go into the first FCU, loop into the second and then go out again - so maybe not radial - or maybe feeding something else as well?. The cable runs under the floorboards so can't follow it.

Must I use immersion heater cable or will heat resistant cable suffice?

I need to replace the cables to my 3kw Immersion heaters. Toolstation sell two different heat resistant flex cable: 1) Pitacs 3 Core Heat Resistant Flex Cable (3093Y) 1.5mm2 • PVC insulated • Resistant to 90°C • BS6500...

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

Erm - well both have been turned on in the past week at the same time and nothing tripped at the CU. I still haven't determined which circuit they're on at the CU. But I can't see anything that's obviously 25A. Almost nothing's labelled unfortunately :( (see picture). Re: the immersion heater...

Two immersion heaters with switched FCUs got very hot

I've had to use my immersion heaters for the first time recently due to a problem with the gas. The switches got very hot and now one won't switch. Reading threads on this forum have raised some questions about the switches.... I've got a Gledhill tank laid on it's side with two 3kW immersion...

Contractor went bust, but plumber still in business - who should provide gas safe cert?

It's utterly depressing. But I was warned when we parted ways not to pursue him in the small claims court because I would have to pay my legal fees and if I won, he could just go bust and I would be left even further out of pocket. As it happened he did go bust even without me pursuing him. And...

Contractor went bust, but plumber still in business - who should provide gas safe cert?

I think they'd have a hard time there. I've paid the contractor (as evidenced by invoices etc). I had no idea that the contractor was not passing those payments on until months later when I found out from one of the trades. He of course had been told by the contractor that I had not been paying...

Oh! I don't have any paperwork. I didn't know about benchmark and registration.

Contractor went bust, but plumber still in business - who should provide gas safe cert?

Hi all, I'm slowly emerging from a nightmare situation where the contractor of my renovation went bust leaving my house with a lot of problems. I'm now trying to get the paperwork together for building control. Before the contractor went under, the boiler had been installed and was running...
