maximum amount of LED drivers on one circuit?

Has anyone said get 240v lamps yet? Do that.

    Door bell

It'll be a wire wound transformer which always hum a little bit. If it's got louder then it may be defective & best to replace it.

Do I insulate this bay window cavity?

Many thanks for the quick response. The loose polystyrene wouldn't go anywhere as it is fully enclosed so might as well buy some and fill it, gotta be better than no insulation at all despite being fairly narrow? See picture attached...

Do I insulate this bay window cavity?

In the end I did manage to wedge some 50mm compressed fibreglass slab in to fill the middle section. The cavity on the angled walls are so narrow I'm not sure if they're worth filling? I could buy loose polystyrene if anyone can advise if it'd be worth filling with this, it's available to buy...

    WiFi thing

You need a wireless access point with built in ethernet switch like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-Wireless-Access-Business-WAC104-100UKS/dp/B01LWUJU8H/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=wireless+access+point&qid=1585395200&sr=8-6 -or- It's fairly easy to set up any old wireless router...

Do I insulate this bay window cavity?

Many thanks. The middle section pictured has a wide(ish) cavity but has a few wall ties in it so putting a slab of fibreglass in would be difficult. The angled/side walls have a narrower cavity and they taper! In hindsight I should have rebuilt the side walls so they were actually parallel to...

Do I insulate this bay window cavity?

Hi all, After removing my window boards from this bay window (see pics) I have found the cavity has no insulation despite the rest of this part of the house having a circa 50mm cavity filled with fibreglass. I am wondering if I need to insulate this bay window cavity and if so what should I...

Sodium light cutting out and do you like Sodium lights?

Not 100% sure but I have seen 70w ballasts that say only HQI (metal halide) on them.

Sodium light cutting out and do you like Sodium lights?

No worries. I would still double check the actual ballast as it could be for metal halide lamps only which run at different current & voltage to sodium lamps

    Thorn 6ft twin ballast wiring

The Tornado has an estimated life of 30k hours and the Topline 36k, how is this acceptable, bearing in mind when it fails the whole fitting goes in the bin? A long life T8 tube lasts longer than that and a switch start ballast lasts 500k+ hours. A good HF ballast should easily last 50-100k hours

    Flourescent light hum/buzz

Not quite accurate. Old halophosphate lamps used to fade badly at the end of their lives only retaining something like 50-60% of their original lumens at end of life (EOL). Modern triphosphor lamps retain nearly 90% of their original lumens at EOL. Triphosphor lamps simply colour shift as they...

Sodium light cutting out and do you like Sodium lights?

Yes it'll be due to voltage drop extinguishing the arc in the lamp, however the slight blip usually shouldn't cause this. Check the fitting, if the ballast has tappings there's a chance it could be set for 240v and you may be one of the rare ones on a 230v supply. Is the lamp within the fitting...

    Help with choosing TRVs

I fitted 8x Danfoss RAS c2 in my own house about two years ago & have had no issues with them. I like the selectable collar for flow direction which apparently eliminates water hammer, they look smart with their satin silver finish, the lock shield is very neat design with the screw-on metal cap...

    motor bearings

If the bearings are getting hot no amount of re-greasing will fix it. Replace the bearing, one should only be a few quid from the interwebs.

    Thorn 6ft twin ballast wiring

What do you mean by T12 lamp holders and how were you going to make them fit? The fittings you pictured have what's known as 'oval' lamp holders which are proprietary to this fitting and will already accept T12 or T8 tubes. The starters you've pictured are cheap rubbish and will fail prematurely...

    Wall Chasing/Conduit Query

Whilst you may be right to a point, times change & we like to avoid electrocuting people nowadays hence we use prescribed safe zones. Cable detectors are, at best, unreliable.

    Wall Chasing/Conduit Query

Why not just fit a twin-arm wall light and some more appropriate bulbs ('lamps', whatever) in place of this slightly poor effort currently fitted? More light & no need to mess about chasing cables into non-safe zones.

    Thorn 6ft twin ballast wiring

The capacitor was manufactured week 19 of 1985 so 35 years old now. Do the fittings have Vivatronic starters fitted (rectangular beige plastic boxes) or normal replaceable cylindrical types? Also them ballasts are the ones that are probably the best ballasts ever made, they seem to last pretty...

    Flourescent light hum/buzz

The electronic starter is just a straight replacement for your glow bottle starter switch, it works in conjunction with the existing ballast etc. The starter I linked to works with any tube from 6" 4w T5 up to 8' 125w T12.
