What wld it cost to run the tests you suggested?

Thanks. House is in Purfleet near Dartford Bridge.

    Confusing problems with heating system

Despite the rads being flushed, two powerflushes, two new hex, still getting loads of crap attached to the mag filter. How can this be?

    Confusing problems with heating system

OK, all rads taken off and flushed - loads of black crud in them, engineer reckons it's limescale. Will fire it up tomorrow and see how long it lasts...

    Confusing problems with heating system

I know what's at fault etc - but what would happen if I did the above?

    Confusing problems with heating system

Dunno if this is a silly question, but - if I had the heating system running with the fill valve open and undone the stop cock to drain the system, what would happen? Would the boiler continue working, pumping the water out whilst being replenished with mains water, ie cleaning it through...

    Confusing problems with heating system

Engineer came, cleaded out the heat exchanger and told me the rads must be failing - probably the chrome bathroom one, ten years old from B&Q. 'Made in China, absolute rubbish. Pick up a new one and shake it and listen to it rattle' he said. Also said the magnetic filter wasn't good enough...

    Confusing problems with heating system

I guess that's the next step but the engineer I spoke to said if a Powerflush doesn't get the crap out, nothing else will. All the rads/boiler was installed in 2005, apart from two rads that are pretty old. I'll probably change these.

    Confusing problems with heating system

Having to drag up this old topic again... Update since a year ago. Had the system powerflushed again by a different engineer. All ok for two weeks then same problems arose - intermittent heat and hot water, filter clogging up, pressure dropping etc. The engineer swore blind the powerflush...

    Confusing problems with heating system

Also, if I let some water out of the system whilst opening the tap to let more water in at the same time, would that be ok? If so, how long could I do this for?

    Confusing problems with heating system

Before I start ripping out rads, would a litmus test be advisable?

    Confusing problems with heating system

OK, the water in the disused rad with dark-ish, with tiny particles. The water in the other rads was fairly clear, with tony particles, but smelt more acidy. The magnetic filter had an inch of crap wrapped around. Where do I go from here?

    Confusing problems with heating system

I'm going today to take samples from the rads, 1 of which was isolated before the power flush so it will be interesting to see if this one contains the same kind of crap the others seem to be producing.

    Confusing problems with heating system

Thanks for all the suggestions, but the problem only started after the power flush so I'm sure it has something to do with chemicals left in the system. Hoew much would a mains water power flush cost? I don't really want to start flushing out all 13 rads!

    Confusing problems with heating system

See above - someone suggested chemcial cleaner left in the system after power flush. No electrical work was done - why?

    Confusing problems with heating system

If there are chemicals still in the system, would a simple drain get rid of most of them along with the debris?

    Confusing problems with heating system

The pipe work is all copper. Would simply draining the system, cleaning the filter and heat exchanger, then re-filling - be of any use? Don't really want to take all the rads off the wall!

    Confusing problems with heating system

OK, spoke to my engineer. The chemicals used in the power flush were SX2 (FX2?), with nutralising crystals. The inhibitor used was X100. He said he's done loads of powerflushes before and never had this problem. Completely denied that any chemicals are left in the system. He went back...

    Confusing problems with heating system

I suspect the power flush has something to do with it. My tenent said he was there all day flushing the system, opening and closing the rads to flush them through, then shutting them all off to do the boiler. When he came over last time it packed up, he said the secondary heat exchanger...
