Confused about rules for fitting new smoke alarms?

Okay, that makes sense then. So it is just a spur radial from the lighting CB in the CU or on it's own CB from the CU. Thanks :-)

    Brilliant. Thanks. :-)

Confused about rules for fitting new smoke alarms?

Thanks for that. The alarms are interconnected via RF so they only need power. In this case, am I okay to power them from the lighting cct?

Best way to get cable through ceiling joists?

Great suggestions there. I didn't think of mini trunking (I have used it in other parts of the house - normally inside cupboards etc for running ethernet as the wife doesn't like it 'visible') but that would work well. Thanks for all the help from everyone. Very much appreciated. :-)

Confused about rules for fitting new smoke alarms?

So, fed from the same CB but it's own radial circuit? Like a spur from the CU? Yes, he'll be approving the final design. He won't be supervising the work but will be welcome to check the work thoroughly as there's no plasterboard etc on the extension at the moment so I'll be taking plenty of...

Confused about rules for fitting new smoke alarms?

What do you mean "radial" back to the CU? Do you mean a ring circuit - out to the lights / smoke alarms and then back to the CU? Apologies for the confusion Yep, I've got a guy (friend of the guy who's running the extension job) who will check it all and sign it off. I'm not sure if our Local...

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

Many thanks Scouse. Much appreciated. :)

Best way to get cable through ceiling joists?

But that wouldn't be deep enough for the cable would it? If the plasterboard is only 12mm and then you have to clip the cable to stop any movement then try and plaster on top of the cable and clip? That would only leave a really thin amount of plaster on between the cable and the surface would...

Confused about rules for fitting new smoke alarms?

Hi all, I'm a DIY'er and I'm planning on doing the electrics in our new extension myself and then get them signed off. Because of this I've been familiarising myself with the BS7671 regs before starting the work (starting in just over a weeks time when the screed is dry). One thing that has...

Best way to get cable through ceiling joists?

I thought notching under the joists was a bit of a no-no? Coving is a really good idea. Thanks. :-) Thanks, running along the tops of cupboards is a good shout - especially for speaker cable. I'm presuming that this method wouldn't be allowed for any cable carrying 'mains' though, would it?

Best way to get cable through ceiling joists?

Good idea but the floor above has laminate down that goes right under the skirting so I can't really get all that up to get the floorboards up without a load of mess and work unfortunately. :( (I should also say that the centre of the room is under the bathroom which has a tiled floor as well)

Best way to get cable through ceiling joists?

Yep, I wasn't sure about that. I'm a DIY'er and I remember looking into this a few years ago when I ran the speakers in the living room. If I remember rightly (and, at my age, that's not guaranteed!!) I think I read that you should try and drill in the centre of the joist but not more than 30%...

Best way to get cable through ceiling joists?

Hi all, I have to run a cable across a kitchen ceiling. Obviously the joists are all going the wrong way. The last time I did something like this I cut holes in the ceiling plasterboard large enough to get my drill in and then bored a small hole through the centre of the joist at the edge of...

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

Yep, it's for an extension so we've already got a Building Warrant (I'm based in Scotland) and I've got a registered spark set up to check all my work and sign it off for me when complete. Cheers :-)

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

A big thank you to everyone for firing in your opinions and giving me the benefit of your experience. I'm going to go with FCUs in-line with both the washing machine and dryer sockets for both "belts and braces" electrical safety and (primarily) as a quick and easy means of isolation if the...

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

Thanks, I've already got the FCU's on the wall so will just re-run the cable to the new outlets. As you say, it's handy to have that isolation switch :-)

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

Yep, that's what I was thinking also. The washing machine / dryer sockets are behind those appliances so not easily accessible (without dragging them out from under the worktop) so a fused spur is a quick and easy way of isolating them. I suppose it's just preference though. I'll probably do it...

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

Thanks. That was how the original electrician did it so I was just going to move those sockets but replicate the method.

Ring main or Radial for sockets in extension?

Thanks for all the replies and information. The current "Sockets" cct for the kitchen is running in 2.5mm T+E from a 20A breaker. The extension itself isn't going to be using much. It'll have the Christmas tree plugged in at Christmas and maybe a standard lamp / phone charger etc. Just bits and...

Does an outside light need to be on it's own circuit breaker?

Hi all, I want to put a couple of outside lights in (flanking the patio doors) that come on when we walk out at night. I just wondered if I can just use the feed from the lighting ring or whether I need to put them on their own breaker ? (I was just thinking that, because they are outside...
