How to paint 1st floor bay

Scaffolding for that wouldn't be expensive, my scaffolder would charge £200-£250 for a full 1st floor lift. I never understand the diehards that will avoid the cost of scaffolding and work from ladders above ground floor. Once the scaffold is up the time saving over ladders (up n down, moving...

    Stabiliser drying time

Best left to the next day / 24 hours after applying.

Mystery stains on external wall under concrete sill

Christ that's an absolute pigs ear. Staining likely due to sills being very poor, water sitting on them and creeping behind sills at the (obvious) join points. In all honesty there is a few weeks work to straighten the mess up, and I suspect most of the lower wood verticals and the horizontal...

    wallpapering around radiators

With two people, half turn loosen the lock shield in to the rad, lift rad from hangers and drop down 90 deg resting the rad on a couple of paint pots. Tighten lock shields temporarily, paper behind rad and then reverse the process.

    Painting a driveway...

About the only thing good enough for car wear would be a 2 part epoxy such as you would find on warehousing floors. I wouldn't recommend painting a drive due to staining, tyre marks and the finish being very slippy when wet or snowy.

best colour system for long cabin finish

Log cabin on order 4.5m x 4.5m, what recommendations do you have for a pale blue or grey finish. Prefer a one pot solution and would expect to lay on 3 coats. No issue with product cost I just want to make sure it's a decent product with a 6 year plus life

    Preparing external window cills

After scraper you need to sand with 80 grit. Then spot prime the bare wood, then undercoat the low areas rub back with 120 and see how the pre top coat finish looks. If there's still lows add more undercoat, use a fine 2 part filler or decide a minor amount of blemish is acceptable. When I...

My cutting in looks different to my roller finish...help!

Cut in, then use a mini roller over the cut in which will give you roller texture as close to the cut in edges as possible.

    Loss Of Supply - (PIC)

20 is an old CB radio slang. The impressive thing with that switch is getting 4 cables terminated in it.

Fire retardant paint vetos 1.0m boundary rule for a shed?

Pretty much as the title. The rules for a shed over 15m sq requires a 1.0m boundary, this can be broken or ignored which the structure is suitably fire proof. I had assumed this meant a brick, concrete slab, cement based sheet type structure ONLY. Reason I ask is my intended 5.0m x 5.0m...

How to avoid brush marks in water based satin paint

Add an egg cup of water per pint in the kettle.mit will give you more time and the paint will go on much easier. The dips in the T and G have cracked due to too heavier a coat.

    Cracking problem?

Have seen similar when over paint walls with wallpaper residue. OP do you mean brand new house, or new to you and painting done after removing old decorative finish?

    Priming before painting..?

You will see more value from a 10 litre pot of trade quality paint than XYZ at £5 less. It covers thicker, has more pigment and gives a great finish on two coats(after a mist coat). Go budget paint and it will still be mist coat plus 2 coats and it will take the same time and not look as...

I'd jet wash it, then use a stabiliser and double coat it with a trade masonry paint.

Builder telling me max 6 downlights on a switch

Thanks for that useful fact correction, shame I was using hypothetical examples. I use 10 amp mcbs for lighting. Posh clients in North London still love a sweep of 16 bulbs candelabras around, amazingly they can afford to run light fittings with 16 x 40w lamps, just three of those, a...

Builder telling me max 6 downlights on a switch

Builder is talking BS. A modern LED down light will draw a max of 10w, a light switch is rated at 10 amp. 10 amp x 230v = 2300 or 230 x 10w fittings  Dimmer switches when using dim allowed LED have to be suitable for the total lighting group load, so say you end up with 10...

    how long will it last?

I'd be taking on the mindset that your property isn't just an external decoration. If the pictures posted are representative of the rest of the property your looking at some fairly major renovation of the window hardwood sill and the stone work. Both can be repaired, but it won't be quick...

Fused Spur 25mm Back Box Nightmare

OP do you have a decent chisel and a malet? Taking 10mm or so out of the wood stud and then mounting a metal back box (with grommets for the cable entries) isn't difficult. Well not if you've done it a few hundred times.

    Extend Ring or Fused Spur?

Would be better to use plastic trunking for the cable runs, MT2 isn't exactly expensive.
