I would like to start by saying that this is purely my personal opinion :) Anyway, my opinion on the matter is this,.. every year i renew my car insurance, every year i get a letter saying its going to cost, eg. £500. On hearing this i shop around a little to see what other people can offer...

Should I be expected to re-seal the windows myself?

This is an installation issue, BS7413 relates only to the production of the UPVC profile (manufactured lengths) BS7412 relates to the manufacture of the windows from the profile. the important issue is, were the company Fensa registered installers? If they were, i suggest you contact them...

    double glazing

Nothing wrong with a 'good' PVCu door if it has a midrail and is properly reinforced (How many burglars do you know who stand at your front door trying to smash it down?) :D Timber doors are no more secure, it's just the only way they can try and market them nowadays as the cons...

    How good are my windows?

Right, forgive me if this bores you! If the air cavity is that small i would say that the units are fairly old, due to that i would hazzard a guess that both panes of glass are just float glass. The U value of a single glazed 'unit' (1 piece of float glass in a frame) is 5.9W/m2K The U value...

    Glazed Units

Leave it on! The tape has 2 purposes, firstly, it makes the unit 'friendlier' to handle and secondly it does also act as secondary (or even 3rd) seal in some cases.

Problems with window and door seals?

As John says above, remove the old sealant first and if the gap is big enough fill with expanding foam first (be very careful not to use too much) Then apply fresh sealant once the foam has 'gone off'. If the gap is only 5mm or less, just get as much sealant in as you can.

Problems with window and door seals?

It certainly won't do any harm and it's a good cheap fix. It's where i'd probably start.

Problems with window and door seals?

Rob, It is possible that the windows are under size and that the sealant around the window is not blocking out the sound. If there is mould on the internal sealant that could be caused by internal condensation or it could indicate that there are gaps in the external sealant allowing...

    Does direction matter?

There is a difference, The coating should always be on face 3 when viewed from the outside (ie. the float pane or in your case 6.3 accoustic on the outside) saint gobain (I think there K equivalent is called eco-logic) units nomally come with a manufacturers sticker on the coated pane. This...

    24mm vs 28mm Sealed Units

To be honest, I think it was. It wasn't as if Mr & Mrs Smith (no offence intended to anyone of that name) would realise that the units thermal performance dropped of slightly. They were sold on the acoustics and that these 'new windows' were 28mm units so therefor must be better than the AN...
