Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

Good point - and I'm actually planning on levelling out the lawn as part of the same process. Thanks to all for the advice - I'm almost ready to begin. A couple more question in terms of ducts: What's the maximum mm2 / capacity cable I'd be likely to fit in a 40mm (32 internal) , 50mm...

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

Does anyone know what the situation is with building / planning control? Do I need to apply / notify / inform before laying duct, or only when I want to put cable through it? (Or would the cable installing electrician handle that?) I'm pretty sure our property search thing didn't show...

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

So is it generally agreed that 450mm under lawn, patio, and decking, with suitable marking tape should be considered reasonable? I was worried I might have to go deeper, and wasn't sure if it would be possible with a spade. 450mm sounds difficult, but might be achievable. I assume I'd want...

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

Having just taken up a patio that was bedded on blobs of mortar, I will admit to giving one of the slabs a whack with a 14lb sledge hammer when it wouldn't immediately come up... Having said that, I was pretty sure there was nothing underneath it but a poured concrete slab, some mud, and a...

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

[/url] Perfect - exactly what I was looking for, thanks. For some reason my google-fu was failing me. I think it's not really sold directly for consumers / idiots like me :) I assume it would look something like this: https://sketch.io/render/sketch5550cdab8f7eb.png Wobbly lines...

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

Sorry - I wasn't clear - The hypothetical cable run will be under a lawn at the house end, and under a patio or decking at the garage end (original post updated). I wasn't sure if the "reasonable depth" was specifically defined. I assume I'll want to go for a happy medium between deep enough...

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been struggling to find appropriate duct (both in terms of finding what the product is, and availability). Would you be able to link to something suitable (or give a product name?) Thanks

Power to remote garage - conduit and cable and feasibility

Hi, I'm currently planning on laying a patio (which has to be done quite soon), but in the future I'd like to be able to run power to a garage on the other side of it. When that happens I don't want to be digging up the patio. I suspect I can't afford either the cost of the electrical work...

Is this par for the course?

Thanks, I'll certainly consider changing it to be part of the socket ring as discussed. The cabling for this can be seen in the photo above, and is run inside plastic trunking mounted above the skirting. It's the two white PVC covered cables seen coming out of the socket into the trunking...

Can work out why my new light isnt turning on!

It could be worthwhile finding out what's the deal with your permanently live black wire (#3?). Particularly with it being near a shower, strange wiring might be something to be concerned about. :!: What did you end up connecting this wire to?

Can work out why my new light isnt turning on!

I wonder if that "permanently" live black is actually a switch wire from another location? I'm thinking part of an old setup for some kind of crossover or multi-way switching thing that may now be unused, partly dismantled, or hidden. Or maybe an old switch cable from another location that...

Is this par for the course?

Hmm, thinking about it, I suspect they actually wanted it to be part of the socket ring, but just wired it wrong.

Is this par for the course?

I assume that's safe as opposed to compliant with the regs, or would fusing it make it compliant also? Also presumably if I fuse it, I'd have to remove the return leg of that spur ring - or the current could / would be shared between the two sides of the ring, and possibly avoid blowing any...

Is this par for the course?

I have now checked and replaced all the metal switches and sockets (other than the cooker switch which seems to be on very short trails and difficult to inspect or remove), but found something unexpected with one of the sockets. As mentioned, one of the metal double sockets has three...

The switch that trips out when using the oven is the central main RCCB, not the cooker switch

I may have mixed up dates, they were on a document somewhere but I've looked at too many documents recently. I haven't quite got to the bottom of the oven situation yet, as I haven't had time. The consumer unit is a crabtree starbreaker. There's a central Switch marked "RCCB split load...

Is this par for the course?

Thanks for the advice, I agree it needs inspection and probably rewiring (which I almost certainly can't afford.) In the immediate term I'm repairing and replacing the unsafe bits I find, with a particular emphasis on the metal switches etc. That particular socket, I've cut back the...
