Help me out with my re-wiring project? (Ethernet)

Ok so you need to plan where you are going to take the cables from ground to first floor. Maybe do it close to the downstairs socket, maybe do it in the middle of the house to make it easier to distribute upstairs. It's your design. It's still a thought experiment. Maybe post drawings of...

Help me out with my re-wiring project? (Ethernet)

Ok going back to the beginning, You want to run multiple cat5 cables from a point in the living room to various places on the first floor. Best way (IMO) is to take all cables up together, ideally if there is an existing path for cabling from ground floor to first floor. Existing electrics...

Help me out with my re-wiring project? (Ethernet)

Ok so you have established your going to be "chasing" the cables into a block work or brick wall. Ideally you need to know how thick the wall is and therefore how deep you can safely make the cuts into the wall. Essentially you will be digging out a channel into the wall. It's very messy. You...

Help me out with my re-wiring project? (Ethernet)

Hi, Planning to any project is key and it seems like you are focused enough to pull this one off. Don't worry about tools just yet it's all a thought experiment at the moment. Key points are how do you intend on hiding the main cable from the lounge to the attic. Are you just going to clip it...

Replacing newel post with Richard Burbidge post

I did something similar in my house and I'm not the most experienced of people. It was green diy but is holding well. The burbidge newel comes in lower and upper sections. I cut the bullnose to fit the lower newel piece. It seemed to make sense to have more support to the handrail than the...

    Opening a fireplace

I think the key to opening a fireplace is to establish where the lintel is that supports the brickwork above. Is there another lintel higher than the photo shows? If not you need to think about putting one in to sit under the bricks you want to keep. On openings less than 1m wide you could...

I agree with MW. Why not just post stuff on twitter and facebook etc. Big companies seem to care about this and I have had results with npower and mkm building supplies recently using this method Graeme

    Chimney condition

You really need to think about the wood you burn. It shouldn't be treated wood (old shed...!) or over a moisture content of 20%. Please read the wood burner manual and more about how to operate a stove correctly or you will definitely cause you and your neighbours probs. Graeme

Using unused chimney as a vent?

He is 19. IMO it's what he's watching on the PC that is causing this. Dunno about the question though ;)

    Look, no Acrows!

Maybe a silly question, Did you drill the hole in the centre to get the alignment or for another purpose? Why did you choose that pattern of stitch drilling? It's nice to see a pro do work, as a very green diy'er it's really nice to see how it should be done. Thanks Graeme

    Death trap table saw

Hope to rip some nicer pieces than just pallet wood. It was just a test piece to check if the saw could cut. I hadn't ran anything through it until I could fit the safety features. Mostly I would cross cut with a mitre saw so maybe buying a blade dedicated to rip is a better idea. Don't...

    Death trap table saw

Well I bought a draper riving knife with the correct mounting orientation. No mods needed except it was 4mm out (bent) along its length. Thanks draper.... Managed to flatten it and get it lined up It also had the correct (I think) hole for the blade guard and it seems to function as...
