Why would you come on a public forum ask for help then act like a tool? I just don't get what you want and behaving like that really isn't going to achieve anything is it? And his name is tony. Tool

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Looks like it will need to be a raft to make sure they have no quibbles when BC inspect it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the plan is: Remove more of the infill to above lintel height Remove 2 bricks from above the front lintel Install some rods resting on top of the lintel and let into...

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Hi Stuart, I thought this may be something BC would bring up. How would you support the concrete cylinders without obstructing or piercing them? Best I can think of is a steel sheet with a hole cut in it and mounted on angle brackets or similar Bit like a register plate I guess Graeme

The infill round the concrete flue. It's bricks and mortar shown in pics but not like a proper wall. Think it's worth putting some support under it or just leaving as is?

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Well i cracked on today helping a friend open up the fireplace. Turns out that it was brick and mortar infill behind the concrete flue. It is a lightweight concrete (not exactly pumice) that may not need lined. It seems pretty solidly held in so not sure if the infill needs additional...

Ok thanks for that! will need to drill around the flue liner and see what's there. Fingers crossed it's not loose fill. The drill bit idea is a stroke of genius :D Will google raft lintels some more and see what it throws up Thanks again Graeme

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Hi, I found some similar pics http://www.uwe.port.ac.uk/heating/chimneys/section4.htm and can see it will definitely need some kind of support. Googling raft lintel doesn't really help, is that a one piece thing or something built in situ? Is there enough support in the liner to hold...

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Would like to diy it if poss and therefore must run it through BC It looks like its concrete pots stacked on each other. Any idea if/what the void behind this is filled with? I would like to take out the lintel but don't want half a ton of sand in my living room if possible. Should I drill...

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

That's essentially what the sweep said: two options for lining a brick chimney 1. Cheapest: steel liner - 20 or so years out of it 2. Expensive: concrete liner - 50 or so years out of it Turns out I have a concrete liner that was put in when the house was built and has never been used...

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Update Had the flue swept and certified ok. Sweep said steel lining a concrete lined chimey was a waste of money as it's absolutely fine to use. Have read that runoff of condensation back down the chimney can be a problem if it's not flashed properly so intend using...

Opening a fireplace and fitting a stove

Thanks justin, From the look of the twigs poking down and debris at the bottom I will get it swept first and go from there If it's lined in concrete and draws ok maybe I can do this without lining, but just fitting a cowl on the open pot. Don't know how BC would feel about that? Graeme
