Is it possible to alter this fireplace to have an open fire?

It all depends what's behind the insert, what size the builders opening is and if you want the exposed brick, what condition it is in. In my house, we took a massive (and ruined) art deco fireplace out. After taking out the clay back and sand (they packed the gap between wall and insert with...

    What paint for radiators?

On advice from here, I painted one using oil gloss. It was in a terrible state, came with the house and was yellowing, scratched and crazed, so had nothing to lose. Sanded it first. A few thin coats so there was no brush marks etc. You couldn't tell it wasn't a factory finish unless you got up...

    Painting over wallpaper paste

I used zinnser guardz on a ceiling after stripping the wallpaper of it. <minor rant about the generation that thought wallpapering a ceiling was a good idea> It worked, as in, the paint didn't peel and went on fine.

Build Over Agreement - Thames Water

Not an expert. If the foul drain starts at your house, and is not shared, e.g., you don't take else's waste, I think it's private up to the boundary where it either joins other foul drains or is connected to a sewer. My limited understanding then is no, you didn't need a build over...

Damp below window + gap in UPVC

I'm not an expert but had similar issues with some windows. Water in the frame is expected, you have drainage holes in there. In theory, this exits and out under the upvc external sill. For whatever reason, the frame water (or wind driven rain outside) is draining down your cavity wall/onto the...

    Pipe thermostat for 2nd extractor

Hadn't considered the pressure difference. Can anyone suggest a 2 speed inline extractor? Quick look on screwfix for 2 speed models use a jumper to set the speed at install time, rather than a low/high speed I can control like this

Opinions on switching from gas boiler to electric

[EDIT: Electricity is 3 or 4 times the cost. You knew what I meant] Gas is 3 or 4 times the cost per kW. A new gas boiler is 90% efficient. Even if it was 50%, you'd still get twice as much heat per £ spent. Also convenience. Combi boiler produces lots of hot water quickly.

    Pipe thermostat for 2nd extractor

I've recently had a large shower put in the bathroom. The existing timed extractor fan comes on with the light and works fine for baths. However, the condensation is too much for it when we have multiple showers. I read on here about using a pipe thermostat to control an extractor fan. In...

    Driveway Drainage

I heard that they don't like you doing it. However, if you already have a combined surface water and foul, then you already will be paying the surface water charge. If so, I wonder if you can just connect it? I'm sure someone who knows more will be along and will say if this is allowed...

    Widening Fireplace: Corbelling

@blup I had a very similar job done (widened kitchen fireplace, and opened vertically) to fit rangemaster and inline extractor. SE was fine with the corbelling removal / support and lintel approach.

    I dislike Trickle vents

Is this a recent thing? 2 years ago ish a local company replaced all the (rotten) wood windows with flush sash upvc. 56 units. I asked for no trickle vents, they said sure. Each room has fireplaces and enough ventilation, although, we asked for none for aesthetics Got a fensa certificate.
