Really that much money to fit a fan?

So can I still DIY a fan replacement if it's like for like, e.g. a failed unit?

    Fire Angel Smoke Alarms query

FireAngel? Sling them all in the bin. I wouldn't use them to grind up and grit the path with. Cannot be trusted at all to save you and your family's lives in the event the worst happens. You'd have more luck paying a squirrel to sit in your hallway and bang a pan with a wooden spoon if it smells...

Really that much money to fit a fan?

Okay, I have a habit of exaggerating to enhance the story, I will admit. It wasn't that bad. The inline extractor was just thrown down on the insulation and the angle it was left at would've hampered the airflow which in my mind would've led to a build up of condensation in the pipe, possibly...

What is the purpose of the battery in the bell box?

Of course, that makes obvious sense now!

If I am at the property tonight I will take a couple photos.

    Electric Shower Recommendation

For what it's worth, I've never fully been able to understand the hate directed towards electric showers. They do seem to be a naff solution to a problem and I certainly agree that a combi-fed thermostatic shower is unquestionably better, but they do have their place. My current house we are...

Really that much money to fit a fan?

In a way, it's great. I've just had a bathroom extractor fitted by a well regarded spark and the quality of installation was pathetic. He's not a rubbish spark either, the rest of his work was top quality (a full rewire of a 1960s house). The cost will cause many to just ignore it, though.

Raising Electric Oven In New Kitchen

I think we've got our wires crossed somewhere. If I adjust the legs, it will bring the whole carcass up (which is no good and I can't do anyway as the worktop is in and fitted).

Raising Electric Oven In New Kitchen

Hi John, It is an under counter cabinet sitting underneath the gas hob. It has adjustable legs (on the cabinet, not the oven, if that's what you are referring to). I was thinking two bits of CLS of the correct dimension sitting either side of the cabinet to almost act as a 'rail' for the oven...

What is the purpose of the battery in the bell box?

Okay, the question in the title will be extremely obvious to many, and I understand that it's to provide a 'back up in the event of a power cut'. However, in the event of a power cut, does the bell box siren and strobe not run from the 12v backup battery connected inside the panel in the house...

Raising Electric Oven In New Kitchen

Hi all, I have just installed a new Wren kitchen as one of the final parts of a full house renovation. I've not done anything like this before so it's very much been a case of learning as I go. When installed in the carcass the electric single oven sits far too low down for comfort and...

Spalled Concrete fence posts. Can they be repaired? (Ed.)

Unfortunately, that is why the concrete has failed and blown in the first place - because of the corrosion. The problem here is it looks like you've lost so much of the concrete from the post that it is now significantly weakened. If we have a particularly bad autumn 'storm' soon with strong...

    Outside Soffit Lighting - Recommendations

That's great. But the original question was asked nearly 12 years ago. He has probably found a solution by now.

Rechargeable AA cells, and built in battery monitors!

Perhaps it would be worth you looking at lithium-ion rechargeable AA's. They seem to be becoming very common these days. You can't charge them using your traditional NiCd or NiMH chargers so you'll have to invest slightly and they seem expensive for what they are, but I guess you are limited in...

BS1363 Plugs, should ferules always be used with them or is it just a nicety?

Not a big fan of this type of plug and never understood the fuss around it. Always thought the cord grip was absolutely terrible on it. Working in a school with a lot of old accessories around, if I encounter one of these there's always a strong chance the individual cores of the flex will be...

125w Fluorescent Tube on an 85w Ballast

Hi all, First off, I'm not after a lesson on the obsolescence of fluorescents. I know all that, this is largely just a curiosity question. I have a quite old 8ft T12 fluorescent fitting that has a 'quickstart' ballast designed for 85w tubes. I have one 100w tube which only very occasionally...

New outdoor light wiring - is this safe?

It looks a bit 'DIY Dave' to me. Twin and earth outdoors unprotected is a bit amateurish, as already mentioned, but also those nylon cable ties tying the cable to the downpipe will degrade over time due to UV and fail. If cable tying anything outdoors I would always use stainless steel cable ties.

    Upgrade old MCB to RCBO

It's a bit of a bodge mixing different manufacturers MCBs, RCDs or RCBOs into a different enclosure. You're not likely to find many people on here who will advocate that. Different manufacturers devices aren't generally designed to work together so the busbar may not line up correctly and you...
