If starting from scratch what lighting would you get?

In my honest opinion, I would agree with BAS and say avoid the halogen spots. I had a halogen ceiling fitting not too dissimilar to this fitted in a bedroom until recently: However, it was awful. Light is only cast straight down and the rest of the room is very poorly lit. This leads...

    Heat from plugs and switches...

Hi there, I noticed recently that when using a particular hairdryer, one of the plug pins gets very hot. Additionally, but unrelated, after having a shower I have noticed the surface of the shower switch located just outside the bathroom door is quite warm. I know that these are...

Washing machine drum is going crazy! What's happened?

You know what Wotan, you could be onto something there. I've suspected for a long time that there may be some sort of drainage issue. Apparently my machine has some sort of cut out feature if it detects an unbalanced load, and it cuts out several times during a cycle all the time. Also...

Washing machine drum is going crazy! What's happened?

Okay so I've done what you guys recommended. First off, the two springs either side of the drum appeared to be as they should be. They weren't detached nor were the lugs worn. I pushed down on the concrete block and it didn't exactly bounce up and down entirely freely. I was able to push...

Alright then. I'll pull the washer out today, take the top off and have a butchers. From past experience this particular washer is immensely fiddly; I'll let you know how what I find.

Hi rocks1, Sorry if I sound like a fool but what exactly is the 'top weight'? I can inform you that the whole drum does move very freely.

Washing machine drum is going crazy! What's happened?

Hi all, Had the washing machine on earlier with a not particularly large load. I was on the sofa watching TV when suddenly I heard a bang. When I went to the kitchen to check I noticed the drum inside the washing machine was shaking about all over the place. For fear of causing a lot of...

    Question about an insulation tester...

Thanks for the replies all. I saw that ebay listing and thought I'd ask on here as mine had accessories included. The case has actually come up quite nicely now that I've cleaned it, it looks in pretty good condition. On the whole, the whole set could pass as barely used condition.

    Question about an insulation tester...

I thought this would be the best place to post this query as I know there are loads of people on here that will know about these tools. I found an old insulation tester in the back of the garage today, it's a Megger BM101. It's in very good condition - looks completely unused and it comes...

    1.5 Flex

Can't you get outdoor flex in pretty ordinary stores like B&Q? I think it comes in blue and/or yellow, not sure though.

How old would you estimate my CU is?

I've completely lost interest in politics since the coalition came into office. Everything they come out with seems to cost me more and more money; take some money from the wealthy for once for gods sake.

How old would you estimate my CU is?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I understand what is being said here and I would honestly to call a good electrician round tomorrow to inspect if I could afford it and I'd love to get the whole place rewired. As with everything nowadays, its just about money - I'm sure some of you can...

How old would you estimate my CU is?

There are no earth bonds to gas or water. It would appear to be TN-S actually. More pictures, also one of that main earth going into the CU.

How old would you estimate my CU is?

From what I've learned in the Wiki on this site, I know that my house doesn't use a TT system but either TN-S or TN-C-S, I'm not entirely sure. Will try and get more pictures in a moment.

How old would you estimate my CU is?

Would the earth be the smaller diameter wire entering from the bottom of the CU alongside the thick grey wires? That earth wire has no sleeving, is that normal?
