Your missing mine. The only group with any interest in meter readings is the suppliers. Due to demarcation problems they did have need to involve the distributors. eg Removing house fuses etc even fitting meters. The suppliers took the readings. Used to be pretty regular but the time interval...

So gov decides smart meters are a good idea from consulations. The drive for them is down to bills, no meter readers and demand monitoring for the electric power generators. Those need regular readings at some rate or the other. Daily wouldn't be much use to them. So as usual the gov passes...

That's not the problem though is it. Self turn off for some reason is the real problem. It even bypasses the checks a supplier needs to make before they decide to turn one off.

The rotating contactors they used to direct calls to the correct place. Metal on metal contacts. The silicone was getting on them. It can turn to sand - not good for rubbing contacts.

Interesting. They appear to be using 3g and talking about going to 4. The other meter I have mentioned where heating is by oil is in Wales. 3g mobiles were not much use where the meter is. 4 too but 5 is ok indoors.
