Doing work on own block of flats to save money

The (large, Victorian) house next to me was renovated and the seven flats sold. We know the couple that own the flat that semi-abuts our house quite well. There was originally a management company appointed by someone (the company that bought the freehold I think) and the leaseholders were not...

    Garden vac reccomendations

I looked at the Titan machine a while back. Mostly I want to blow leaves together and then pick them up, but I need a suction feature to tidy up awkward areas. And some of the time that means wet leaves. On the second page of questions it says: Q. How does it perform sucking up wet leafs...

    Garden vac reccomendations

You could turn them into leaf mould.

    Cherrypicker

As well as that, it might make them liable if there is an accident, as they will have hired a potentially v. dangerous piece of kit to someone without any training. So I am surprised that firms hire these out without seeing their training certificate (or whatever).

    Advice on removing tree braches

He says it is but says he is only doing some branches. If someone else is doing the rest I can't see why he would not get them to do the lot. +1 to that.

    Advice on removing tree braches

Sorry but I don't see what that has to do with my question. Whether you remove 5% or 95% of the branches you will still be left with the trunk. What are you going to do about that? Sounds daft to me. If you cut a higher branch it may well bounce off of a lower branch and land somewhere...

    Advice on removing tree braches

You say that you want to remove the whole tree but are only asking about removing the lower branches. What are you going to do with the rest of the tree? If you are getting someone to deal with that I suspect it would be simpler to get them to deal with the whole tree.

    Green walls!

@JohnD tells people to use Wet & Forget which may be, but often isn't, good advice. Wet & Forget & Patio Magic are commercial products which have Benzalkonium Chloride as the active ingredient at c. 5-10% level and you dilute them down to the 1-2% level. If you are absolutely sure that you will...

    Pool heat pump installed!

Theoretically yes. But it all depends on how much heat is being lost, and that depends on lots of factors. 9,000L is not that big, e.g. 3x3m by 1m deep. Is it above ground? If so it will loose more heat through the sides than an in-ground one would.

    Pool heat pump installed!

One joule of energy will raise the temperature of 1g of water 1ºC. 1L of water is 1kg =1,000g, so 9,000L will need 9 million joules to go up 1º. The watt is a joule/second, so 4kW is 4,000 joules/second. So 9 million / 4,000 is 2,250 seconds or 37.5 minutes. That assumes no loss of heat...

    Misleading test for dead

Perhaps you would first explain why that piece of wire is not a "direct connection between Live ( or switched Live ) in the lamp to Neutral". The same idea can be expressed in numerous different ways. Using a rude option rarely achieves the best results. Thanks for the confirmation. Despite...

    Misleading test for dead

I did not say I had that. I did ask if switches were arranged in this way for a good reason but did not get an answer.

    Misleading test for dead

Thanks for trying to help. I think the problem here is that all of the electricians are used to expressing things in a certain way (nothing wrong with that, all trades have conventions and use language in a specific way) and when I used words/phrases to mean something different there was...

    Misleading test for dead

In response to "But live must connect to neutral somewhere to complete the circuit." which, AFAIUI, contradicts In response to "that connection [between live & neutral] is made at the bulb and the switch opens / closes a gap in the live wire" Which makes me think that we are talking at...

    Misleading test for dead

Strictly speaking you implied it, hence my question. :D I have checked and I do get zero when the switch is on & 230V when the switch is off. So previously, either I was testing with the switch on and did not notice or I was not making contact. Thanks for sorting out my confusion. One...

    Misleading test for dead

Thanks for the clarification. Are you saying that the two wires in a light switch are never L&N but always L&SL? I can't be 100% sure but I am pretty certain that I would have left the switch in the off position except when I was testing the light. The room is in use ATM but I will check...

    Misleading test for dead

@EFLImpudence I have no idea what you mean. I did not mention any colours. There are two wires in the switch. What do you suggest that I call them if not live & neutral? About the old switch I said "Something was wrong with this (working intermittently)", so it could not be used to reliable...

    Misleading test for dead

Yes. I did say that I could have worked out which was the correct MCB by switching the light on and turning the MCBs off one at a time. No switched live. Just a live & neutral to the switch.

    Misleading test for dead

When we bought the house one room had a light switch with a 'on at dusk off after X hours feature'. Something was wrong with this (working intermittently), so I replaced it with a normal light switch. There are four MCBs marked lights and it was not clear which was the relevant one. So I...
