Just hired a Bricklayer... Not happy after second day

No, I was waiting for you to answer the questions from early this week.

Can I sand and varnish this floor?

What are you getting all question marked about just because you've misunderstood whats been said. I wasn't criticising Chriswheela, i was merely saying what had led me to think he wasn't qualified to hang that new boiler or work with gas. He did say "I've replaced the boiler" nothing about any...

Just hired a Bricklayer... Not happy after second day

"the Irish army is relevant" relevant to what? The thread is about a bricklaying device. How was i , or any reader of the thread, previously supposed to know, or wish to know, the history of this man? What purpose would rooting around what the newspapers call "the human story" serve when...

Very very new to DIY first home, big project

I earlier replied to your floor sanding thread, and i noticed there that you were a bit over your ski's. Slow down, collect details, make a plan(s) & get prices. Coming on a forum like this is a good start. Start your refurbishment with one simple job, and see it carried through to...

Can I sand and varnish this floor?

I may be out to lunch here but: You call the rads radiators which suggests that you are not a GaSafe or a plumber. Perhaps you'll call a Gasafe in to certify your installation? Chilly in the house or the room? When the floor is properly prepped then filler is used so that the finish looks...

    How best to rectify?

The hole is irrelevant to structural stability. Simply pack it with brick off-cuts and mortar, & then set a brick or two as a facing. Do the same from inside if the hole is still open. Although it seems shallow, the hole might previously have carried a drainage run? Open the nearest manhole...

JohnD, UH huh, there's a common fundamental mistake just been made. See: fundus

Can I sand and varnish this floor?

As part of your prepping there's almost no limit to what you could do but unless, for instance, you have need for insulation in the floor then its not a necessity. Noise proofing is very difficult to achieve - but research it. Why not read back posts on this sanding subject using the "Search"...

Just hired a Bricklayer... Not happy after second day

"They also serve who only stand and wait". What does the Irish Army have to do with this thread? And if it is somehow, indeed, to be linked in then what do casualty lists have to do with it either? Does being killed in Afghan or Vietnam somehow have more merit than being killed in Lebanon? I...

    External waste pipes angle problem

In the new pics the render is left stopped above the lower exposed brickwork leaving a water trap ledge that could lead to interior damp. You definitely need a Bell Cast there. BTW, all Bell casts and beads such as Angle beads should be in non-rusting plastic for external work. There's no...

Can I sand and varnish this floor?

Ask the mods to transfer your thread to the Flooring Forum. Your floor boards can certainly be sanded and finished after due prepping of the floor - by and large, your boards are in good nick. fwiw: there are a number of other non-flooring issues showing that might need attending to before any...

    External waste pipes angle problem

The AAV is incidental to your drainage problem. The 150mm is a precaution in case the fixture gets flooded to its "flood rim" - which is one problem you dont have. However, its as above noted, too low and needs say a 1500mm min stub of soil pipe above the Tee.

    External waste pipes angle problem

I didn't want to get in to deep but whatever! I admire your energy and instant response to advice. AAV's should be fitted a min say of 150mm above the flood rim of the highest fixture eg 150mm above a WC cistern or a Ped basin. They are usually tight fits for an obvious sealing purpose - they...

    External waste pipes angle problem

There's an overflow pipe in what looks like an isolated position - what is it coming from? The render is cracked in a number of places, significantly at the vertical join line with the new extension. The render, to be blunt, has problems in patches & looks terrible. Once you get blown and...

    External waste pipes angle problem

Cutting and lowering the soil pipe would be problematic with the WC branching into the bossed Tee? A new arrangement would be needed, & i dont think it would be DIY work? I back out of making what i think should be done because i think that there might be more to this than we can see or guess...

    External waste pipes angle problem

There are a few instances of faulty installation showing in your pic. And if this is how the external Soil & Waste have been left on view - then what might be happening with the drainage inside the bathroom? From what i can see then it might be a bit too much for a DIY'er to sort out - remember...

Just hired a Bricklayer... Not happy after second day

I'd give the guy a fair shot at selling his device - I hope he does well, as I hope any squaddie or grunt does well after their service. Back in the day he had stepped up - and no matter his trade or occupation in the services, they all serve. And most all find it difficult to settle back into...
