If its distemper it will cause problems. If unsure I would give a coat of Zinsser Gardz. This will sort any problems you may have. Then coat up with whatever your putting on the ceiling.

Don't use ready mixed. I would go for Toupret powdered. The Easyfill is not as good as the Toupret as paint flashes over it.

A light sanding and a coat of water based varnish should be fine. Oil based varnish actually gives a yellowish tinge to what ever your painting. Should be ok.

Im surprised the stain block didn't work. Was it a water based one ? Some of the water based ones are not as good. Use some good old oil based undercoat or a coat of Zinsser Coverstain, which is oil based.

I wasn't far off, It is a Supaglypta, which are more heavy weight than the Anaglypta's.

Tikkurila Panasari Akva is designed for Upvc and similar substrates. Colourbond also do a similar version.

Tikkurila Optiva Colour, in white is very nice and white. Not a bad price either.

Agree with all of the above :) I've started using Tikurrila white emulsion, very good, no flashing and a reasonable price too.

Hate it when the dried carp falls into the scuttle. Might start pouring it through a pair of tights to sieve it !

You need to get it on with a deeper pile roller to get enough paint on the door, and then lay it off with a decent brush.

Depends how old it is. If its old it could be solid mahogany, if newer it might be mahogany veneer over chipboard. I think it looks lovely with the overmantle on it as well.

Good rub down and a coat of Zinsser Gardz will sort it.

You should be ok with Normal Solvite. If in doubt use some ready mixed adhesive which will be stronger anyway. You shouldn't have any problem with papering over the painted lining paper.

Either coving would be ok, Paint it with whatever the ceiling is painted with.

Stabilising solution is meant for exterior powdery render. Inside use the Gardz as mentioned above.

Its not really a finishing coat, it adheres well to plastic and is used as a primer/stain block. On that vent alone I don't think you would have any problems as you could always give it another coat as and when.
