    Why is my finish crap?

Emulsion paint is not for woodwork. You need either a water based satin or gloss paint. It needs to rubbed back to the original finish and degreased first.

    Why is my finish crap?

When you say "Silk" do you mean Emulsion or Satin for wood. It looks like the re is something on the woodwork like a grease or such like. You should be rubbing all woodwork down and degreasing with sugar soap or similar degreaser first.

HELP! Which paint should I use? Pre-primed louvre doors

Whatever you put on is reacting with the original coating. I would give a coat of Zinsser Cover stain and then carry on with whatever you were using.

    Stripping a facia board

Don't use a flame as there may be tinder dry bits that could catch alight. Better with a heat lamp which is safer. Use a decent shavehook and scraper.

Painting a fence and not splodging it everywhere

Lift the panel up a couple of inches and slide the plastic or a piece of wood underneath. Usually if you splash the base panel the paint wont come off, you can rub it with a bit of powdered cement which will hide it.

    One coat gloss or not?

I hear what your saying Opps. I use an adhesion primer first in most cases. Good preparation is key to getting a good finish as you know. There are many WB paints out there and most are crap and aimed at the retail/Diy market. If things are done right then a decent water based gloss or satin...

    Unpainted year old new Plaster

As the plaster is so thirsty and porus, you wouldn't be able to get all the grease out. You can give it a mist coat first and then see if it needs a stain block on top.

    Skirting board advice needed.

The sloping part is called "Stringing" this is part of the stairs. You can always add timber to the top of it to build it up into a larger skirting, with a moulding on top. The straight slirtings at the top are easy to fit.

    Unpainted year old new Plaster

And if after you have done as JohnD says and it still comes through use a stain block which should seal it. Only one thinned coat of a cheap contract matt is needed to mist coat the walls. Once dry, rub the walls down and fill any thing that needs it. Then start to put full coats on.

Which Finish for Oak Internal Doors

I have similar doors which are Oak veneered. Your not supposed to Oil them as this can cause the adhesive on the back of the veneer to fail. I just used a decent waterbased satin varnish. Very quick to do and looks great. Waxing just takes ages to build the coats up.

    One coat gloss or not?

To be fair more and more manafacturers are slowing getting rid of oil based paints. You wont be able to get any soon. You need to start trying to get along with water based paints. They have come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Ive been painting 39 years and am practically all...

    How much silicone?

As above, try and wind the legs up to minimise the gap first. A plastic quadrant might be the best option in the long run.
