    New plaster painting

Don't panic, find an area where it's least in view and try scrape a bit off with your nail or a hard edge, it should give you a good idea of how well it has adhered to the wall. If it scrapes off like a skin your best bet is to sand it back, you might be ok though. I would do any further...

    New plaster painting

The base layer needs watering down to combat the absorption property's of fresh plaster and give a good key for the subsequent paint layers to adhere to. If you just apply undiluted paint the fresh plaster sucks all the water out real quick and just leaves the paint sitting on top like a skin...

Currently at the painting stage of our full house renovation and have used Dulux Trade whenever possible (DT Vinyl Matt, DT Diamond Matt, DT Quick Dry Satinwood, DT Undercoat/Primer) and am really satisfied with this decision. I sanded back the staircase to bare wood and have applied 2 coats...

    Bay window board insulation

For the little time it takes It's absolutely worth asking these questions just to be sure regardless of how self explanatory they might seem. To answer the thickness question I would just go with whatever you can fit under whilst still making it look decent. Personally I would aim for 75mm.

Internal door hinge recommendations (heavy doors)...

Thankyou very much, although these wont be for actual firedoors I presume there will be no downside to using firedoor hinges? Thankyou very much for your suggestions, as they arn't actually for firedoors I'm thinking maybe the extra cost for the lift of functionality might not be worth it...

Hi everyone, Just looking for some recommendations for hinges, the doors weigh about 27kg each and I'm told 3 hinges per is a good idea. Any feedback Is much appreciated, Thankyou.

    Awkward door width

I would build out one side like you mentioned, glued and screwed. I received 7 of those doors this morning, look really nice and are heavy as lead!

    Door casing width, what size?

Its not normal to have to do it because you would plan ahead to accommodate for Plasterboard + Skim but adding extra strips of wood to build out the casing is the solution. I had to do it during my current renovation because the bricks walls were a lot thicker and any door casing available, I...

    Bay window board insulation

Direct fixing to the underside will be fine you wouldn't want to leave a gap in this case as it would leave potential for the cold air to get inbetween and render the insulation pretty useless, in an ideal world the insulation would be on the inside but in this case I imagine that isn't an...

Paint for internal walls which will always be 'slightly damp' in places

I saw stuff at homebase the other day specifically for sealing damp before painting. Think it was actually called "damp" by Johnstone's. Not sure if this is what you mentioned houses nearby have tried. I'm always one to attack the cause rather than hide the effects, if you can install some...

opening up fire place for logburner (threads merged)

Ah yes I was in the same boat John I know exactly what you mean. In my case the bricks behind the lintel were perpendicular to the lintel itself therefore they were tied into the brickwork of the back wall, with the span being less than two bricks a further lintel was not required. Depending...

    Matt Emulsion Recommendations?

I've just waxed a few pennies today on Dulux Trade Diamond Matt and Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt, Homebase currently have 3 for 2 on all paint so worked out pretty good for Six tins. Both were recommendations from a good friend in the trade, he actually mentioned the Johnstone's durable and said it...

opening up fire place for logburner (threads merged)

Hi John, Firstly I'm not in the trade but I'm confident I can offer you sound advice in this case (currently renovating myself and have opened up a fireplace and installed a lintel myself) Regards filling around the lintel, just knock up a good strong mortar mix and fill all the gaps, leave...

    Quick Bathtub question...

Hey everyone, Do bathtubs expand when full of hot water? I ask because my new tub fits to the mm against the (plasterboarded) walls on either side of the bathroom. I'm thinking it might crack if it does expand? My other option is to cut out the plasterboard on one side so as to leave some...
