    Hard to say if it's safe. A properly constructed suspended concrete floor will be sitting on load bearing walls at the perimeter. DIY could mean it's just got some mesh thrown into the middle.

    Years ago you had to lay the fireback on a bed of sand and carefully work your way along the scoreline with a sharp bolster. Nowadays a diamond blade goes through it easily.

    I'd say it's a clay fireback. For most open fires you should cut them in 2 pieces along the scoreline. This allows for the different expansion as the bottom is much hotter than the top. For certain fires, like decorative gas ones, you can leave them as one piece.

    For a home gym it's more about picking the correct mats for the job. For garage floors when heavy equipment is going to be used a 6 inch slab is recommended. Steel is only really needed if the ground below the sub base is soft.
