    Possible that opening in lounge was never there and room was originally divided by glazed partion/doors that have been removed and wall upstairs supported off double floor joists. Does upstairs wall support ceiling joists, if not it is not load bearing as such.

    Possibly due to wood being more at risk from moisture degredation than brick thus a constant air flow/ventilation is considered desirable although this will reduce heat retaining properties?

    Perhaps it to do with trying to keep cooking smells and cooking water vapours contained in the kitchen and extracting direct to the outside, same with wc but without the vapours?
