    Mixing plaster problems

Depending on the design of the paddle, try running the drill in reverse. This can keep the sharper edges of the paddle away from scraping the sides of the bucket. Nick

    VAT rates

Thanks guys for the responses. Conflicting opinions still-I’m siding with snb, but that’s only because it’s the answer I want  Also agree with Dan though, it’s really not clear and a lot of hassle. Nick

    VAT rates

Hi all, Can anyone help me understand what VAT rates are applicable as I’m confused!:? I have two contractors, the main one is installing a biomass heating system. Definitely reduced rate 5%. Ok so far, but they're not certified to do the electrics so I need a separate contractor to...

How much weight can wall-fixed kitchen cabinets support?

I don’t think the weight is likely to be a problem, but if you're putting wine above cabinets near the ceiling, be wary of spoiling it as the temperature will be surprisingly higher near the ceiling, particularly given the heat from cooking.

    dot and dab failing

Nothing wrong with the adhesive if it stuck to both the wall and the paper. The problem’s in the adhesion of the paper to the core of the board. What board did you use? What did the rep say?

    Overboarding landing

Hi all, I’ve overboarded the entire upstairs of the house with 6mm ply to level the floor. All good so far but what happens when I get to the top of the stairs? I’m told that the brain gets confused by differences in step height and now the top step onto the landing is effectively 6mm higher...

    Trailer lock

This looks like the way forward - I reckon I can fabricate something chunky enough to deter thieves but easy enough for me to unlock and remove. Cheers, Nick

    Trailer lock

Yeah I think you’re right, it’s non-standard so no place for a padlock unfortunately. It’s a Conway trailer so not just something I’ve cobbled together though so I can’t be the only one with this problem :?

    Trailer lock

Hi all, I often have to park my car + trailer and leave it unattended. Sometimes it’s only for a minute or two, but sometimes longer. Can anyone recommend a lock that will prevent anyone from detaching my trailer and making off with it? It seems like there are lots of hitch locks for detached...

insualted plasterboard- dot and dab or metal stud

You're fine to dot and dab it if you use the Siniat Universal Bonding Compound. The "universal" bit means it sticks all types of boards. Other bonding compounds tend not to stick so well to thermal boards though.

UPVC door-cutting slot for letter plate

I recently did a catflap in a UPVC door. I was quite concerned I’d destroy the door, but in the end it was simple. Leave the door in situ, it’s really a lot easier than you might currently be thinking! As s60tsy says, measure well. If it’s not in the middle, it’ll be very noticable.

what type of insulated plaster board is this

Looks like an extruded polystyrene board to me. Dot and dab should be fine.

does anyone know the heat output of sawdust ?

Anyone see Mythbusters on Quest last night? It was a somewhat contrived situation, but they certainly made quite an impressive fireball from sawdust...

does anyone know the heat output of sawdust ?

I'd be interested to hear just how big the explosion risk is...I produce a similar amount of sawdust to you Big-all and I wrap mine up in newspaper like Christmas crackers. It's cheap and I've never had a problem (yet!).

Please help: buying a house and completion certificate?

Andy, I think you're worrying yourself too much over this. Freddy has this one covered. Your lender has sent someone to value the house who has noted that the extension is not complete and they've accepted this and still chosen to lend you the money. It's really not such a big deal - the...

Drill holes in paving slabs for drainage or remove them?

Slabs with a camber make most sense. With an area that size, there should be no problem with drainage through the soil/grass etc to the side. I'd definitely avoid gravel on the existing slabs though. It'll be like walking on marbles and only a matter of time before someone slips over. Nick

    Satellite dish connection

Thanks again Chris, This is all useful stuff. It sounds like it's a question of what the previous owners were receiving then. If they were receiving UK Freesat then it should be a fairly simple case of installing a Freesat box. However, if there was anything at all unusual in what they...

    Satellite dish connection

Thanks Chris. I don't know anyone local with a Sky box and I can't see anyone lending me one unless I can get it back to them within a couple of hours, so unfortunately that option's probably out. Assuming that the dish hasn't changed position and is therefore still pointing at a satellite...

    Satellite dish connection

Afternoon all, I've got a bog-standard freeview box connected to the aerial on the roof via coax cable. Works fine, everyone's happy. I've also got a satellite dish that the house's previous owners installed. This is not attached to anything at the moment other than some cable with an...
