    LED streetlights

Yeah, the council have installed them on a section of a long street here in Cardiff. They don't seem as bright, but I think they're very good and the light they give off is much easier on the eye when driving at night - especially compared to the awful yellow sodium lamps used further up on...

Draught from uPVC door. How can I sort it?

Hi there. The larger screws aren't protruding. The lock keeps are solid too. They were very loose before the screws were replaced - hence the door kept jamming. I've read in other threads that hinges can be adjusted. It seems that the hinge side of the door seals perfectly but the lock side...

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

It does sound quite terrifying. I also recall a time I was working in a garage fitting some sockets - I had isolated the mains and put in new wiring. I had fitted one socket but the other was still unfinished with bare cables hanging out of the metalclad backbox. Little did I know live and...

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

Sort of reminds me of being a kid and someone saying they licked one of those 9v PP3 batteries - you just have to try it. In this case, being older and wiser and knowing not to do what everyone else is doing or telling you to do is of great benefit.

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

I've never experienced that but after the post from 'ban-all-sheds', I definitely don't want that to happen to me. I don't think 'ban-all-sheds' likes me very much. :|

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

I always take the necessary precautions - its just a fistful of times where my mind has been all over the place. I probably shouldnt do any work on those days. I remember my experience as a young boy very vividly. I had changed a plug on a fluorescent dresser lamp at my grandmothers house...

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

Good to know. I thought it was just me being incredibly clumsy and lackadaisical.

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

I've had about three 240v shocks in my life, two of which came from touching live wires forgetting that I hadn't isolated mains. The other shock was when I was just a small boy and changed a plug but didn't put the cover back on the plug - touched the terminals and... well, I had a shock...

    Plaster problem around window...

Yep its my house, not rented or anything. The damp problem is just cosmetic now. It's caused some visible mould in the corners of the room but I plan to redecorate it when I next have time off. It's only a small spare room so not a big deal at the moment. The windows are a few years old now...

    Plaster problem around window...

You recommend I simply ignore the now missing few chunks of plaster? (they fell off after I took the picture so nothing is loose now )

    Plaster problem around window...

A picture I just took... The bit I'm showing you is along the top of the window. Excuse the large gaps, that's just where I've removed the plastic trim. As you can see, the plaster is coming away but most of it is sound, it's just a few chunks. The problem is only limited to the...

    Plaster problem around window...

Hi all, I've had some damp problems upstairs in my house recently which I've more or less sorted now (caused by people showering without opening the window, drying a lot of clothes without ventilation etc). It caused the wallpaper around the windows to become damp and come away. Today I...

Draught from uPVC door. How can I sort it?

Hi all, had a new uPCV door fitted to the side of the house about 2 years ago and only recently with the cold weather have I noticed there is a considerable draught coming from the top corner on the left side - the same side as the door handle. I'm thinking it can't be a naff seal as the door...

How bad is it that my house has unearthed lighting circuits?

I'm not a qualified electrician or anything so I wouldn't go near the bowels of the CU, I'll leave that to the pros. In all honesty, not being qualified puts me off doing much of the work myself, just in case something does go wrong but I have confidence in my own work. I have had to...

How bad is it that my house has unearthed lighting circuits?

Only £200? For some reason I thought it would cost way more. I do need to get this place inspected, urgently. :| My whole house is just bizarre. The guy that lived here before was absolutely nuts. He clearly didn't have the faintest clue what he was doing. I've got a wire coming out...

How bad is it that my house has unearthed lighting circuits?

Thanks for the reply. There is a metal light fitting in an upstairs bedroom. Would you recommend I get this changed to a plastic fitting immediately? There is also a metal fluorescent fitting in the garage, but it is borrowing an earth from a socket also in the garage  Is that normal...

How bad is it that my house has unearthed lighting circuits?

I live in a 1960's semi-detached and there is no Earth wire at any of the ceiling lights anywhere in my house. Upon closer inspection, I can see that there is a bare copper earth wire running through all the cables but at every light it has been cut off. I believe this is probably the work...
