Thoughts regarding running a low voltage DC immersion heating element directly from a solar panel?

Emphasis for safety, certainly burns the material but it is non-combustible in theory, they don't weld shut so much as produce an intense arc trying to open. The arc continues until either the gap widens or the energy source goes away, if your unlucky neither happens and the arc does a lot of...

Moss in the garden - how to deal with it?

I use Iron sulphate powder mixed in a watering can, about a tablespoonfull per 10 Ltrs spread over about 2sqyds!! Slows it down, turns it black so it is easier to rake out and burn. Makes the grass green and grows like stink.

Thoughts regarding running a low voltage DC immersion heating element directly from a solar panel?

I have had my system running since 2015 doing exactly this but there are a few pitfalls :- An immersion heater thermostat is not designed to break DC current and will arc and catch fire, an iboost DOES NOT use DC current for the immersion heater. To get the best out of a solar panel it requires...

    aches and pains

This might sound daft but try sleeping the other side of the bed!! We are creatures of habit and always sleep the same way, I found it helps with shoulder pain but also helps sore hips. The only other way is ask your maker for a rewind hahaha

    What have you bought today?

Angle Grinder from B&Q Just started cutting some tiles in situ this morning, clouds of dust, funny noise then I realized there was smoke mixed in with the dust clouds and a nasty burning smell different from the cutting disk, switched off and backed out of the dust to see smoke pouring out of...

    Twin sockets with USB

I finally got around to measuring the standby power on a LAP EBN22U3B twin USB twin socket and it is between 0.1W & 0.2W (resolution of my power meter). I happened to have various wallwart phone chargers for comparison, older ones were typically 0.3W to 0.4W but newer ones were between 0.1W &...

    Gas fire isolation

Exactly, so isn't it about time "gas safe" got there house in order and removed accreditation from such people as they are a danger to the public and bring the whole system into disrepute. EDIT : I do apologize I did not want to hijack this thread, just venting after some bad experiences as I...

    Gas fire isolation

I wouldn't trust the opinion of these so called gas safe engineers, the last two I have had in this house were incompetent. One did not know how a gas fire isolation valve worked and the other could not find a simple boiler ignition fault. I should add in both cases waffled on and on till the...

Insulation on a partially sloped ceiling

I have used vermiculite poured in from above before but you also have to make sure the bottom is not open or it leaks out. Some may say this method is bad as it stops air circulation but I had no problems in the 10+ years I remained in the house after doing it.

Samsung WF80F5E0W4W shuts off mid wash and buttons not responsive

Ohh dear sounds like a power fault on the PCB then, possibly old bulgy electrolytic capacitors as Harry said but also I had a similar fault on my Indesit that turned out to be a corroded via (hole joining two sides of PCB) easy fix but bugger to find especially as you cannot get hold of...

Washing Machines - which makes are generally thought of as the best these days?

I ignore so called polls on the basis that most of the replies are either fake or given in haste immediately after purchase, I would far rather feedback from someone genuine. In my case we have had an Indesit widl126 wash/dryer for about 15 years and so far have only had to repair the pcb once...

    Chain Saw Repair

I think I am right that this new fuel requires a richer mixture, certainly I have had to tweek a number of my small carbs to get them to run like they used too. The other thing is all sorts of other gubbins delights in failing as soon as you look at one part so worth taking the plug out...

Removing emulsion and vinyl paint from plaster

I have just done a wall exactly the same problem, I found soaking with a sponge marginally helpfull, at least it loosens the edges of the patch but still unfortunately quite a few gouges in the plaster. On other walls having suffered that I just removed the peeling paint then sanded down the...

Strange creatures in my compost heap, with pics

Well I left the lid off so they could all fly away which they did, but quite slowly one by one some remaining more than an hour. The way they were behaving made me think they could be lacking sugar/pollen that they would not find in there. I wonder if they hatched in there. Anyway all gone now...
