    Renting out Mum's house

Really? How so. I would have thought it would have been an instant fail, surely?

    Renting out Mum's house

When I bought my place (3 bed semi, built in 1955/56) it was all rubber insulated, and I had it rewired before I moved in. You certainly won't get an EICR passed (and so be able to rent it legally) without doing it, if the cable IS genuinely rubber insulated. As to a spec, just put in plenty...

How to safely connect a 12v radio to a 12v leisure battery?

Bung a diode in series to prevent any current flowing if you get the polarity wrong?

New LNB on old Sky satellite dish?

I suspect that you may have encountered the difference between a Mark 3 and Mark 4 Sky LNB... See here for a better explanation than I can type... And here for an adapter...

New copper light fitting to old wiring (no earth)

You could combine the method above with a voltage reading at the socket between live and earth... ;)

    Strange single pin socket

It's an old electric clock connector. Undoing the screw in the middle allows the plug to be pulled out, and the flex to be connected to the back of it and fed through the hole - so you do in fact have a plug already :D

Lidl Smart colour change LED bulb.

£20 to use a £3 bulb? I'd cut my losses at £3 and bin it... Up to you, but generally not worth while I would think unless you have a house full of ZB toys already (or want to buy same in future).

British Standard for USB built into wall sockets?

@JohnW2 Yes, same here. I'm not keen on embedding a small, cheaply made, permanently powered SMPSU (or dozens of them!) inside the walls of my house. Plug in chargers for me... :)

Got a colour TV but the only colour is green!

Most common cause would be a SCART (or maybe HDMI, I'm sure I've seen it with those...) lead being loose - unplug both ends and put them back to see if this helps.

    Large Lamp post

How large is the diameter of the post you've got to work with? Would something like this be able to fit through? https://www.diy.com/departments/white-10a-in-line-wire-connector/753979_BQ.prd 'pins' on the lamp cable, 'holes' on the power cable ;) HTH Colin

Help please with appliance and ext lead

You could do that, but easier is to put the clamp meter around the meter tail, note the reading, then start the dryer up. Then note how much the clamp meter read out has increased by. No need to make up any temporary leads etc that way.

    Help with a plug socket.

Yes, that wiring (or rather two thirds of it) is certainly rubber insulated stuff. My house (built in the same year as yours) was wired throughout with that cable when I bought it, and it crumbled at a touch. The only option was to totally rewire, which I had done prior to moving in. Let's...

PIR outside light, but with 90 degree mounting?

Hi, I'm planning to add an outside light with a PIR to the corner of a garden shed, and was looking to find something similar to this, but that can be fixed on a 90 degree corner of the building. https://www.screwfix.com/p/asd-black-bc-pir-master-half-lantern-wall-light-with-pir-60w/45075...

    Waterproof Wired Doorbell Push

Watching this thread with interest, as keen to fit something similar at my place - the bell push MIGHT last two weeks before it fills up with water, if I'm lucky(!)

    General Rewire

Depends where you are based and what you want (a few sockets and a light in each room, or loads of downlights, chrome fittings, "smart" stuff etc)... I had a (reasonably) basic rewire done for around that figure a while ago, a three bed semi in similar state (unoccupied) but with plenty of...

    Who's had the vaccine?

If they offer you a flu jab, take it, lol. Flu sucks. If a job stops you getting it, it's a no-brainer.

    Is a professional needed?

I'm surprised by saying not to put smokes on the lighting cct. I would have though that would have made sense, then at least if it trips you would know about it. What am I missing, why would it be a bad idea, and how would they be fed? Just asking out of interest - when I had my house rewired...
