    Securely wipe laptop

Forgotten and lost Windows login passwords... This comes up a lot, the one I used was a thing called Lazesoft Recovery Suite which did the job nicely. Google should find it.

    Smart meters (again...)

Yes, it's tricky really. I personally can't see any advantage to me from having one, and what with CV19 as well currently, there's no benefit to me, so I'm inclined to just ignore them until they turn up in person. That said, obviously the meter(s) does belong to them (not to me), so they...

    Smart meters (again...)

Hi, SSE keep badgering me to replace my meter with (I assume) a smart meter. I don't particularly want one, as I don't see any advantage to me in having one. However, they are becoming quite insistent, and, looking at the current electricity meter it looks to have been installed in 2008 (I...

Moving from Sky to Sky Freesat

If he's got sat feeds to upstairs then a freesat recorder is the way to go. If the TV has built-in sat tuner then even better :) YouView is a combination of Freeview off-air and internet delivered content from iplayer etc, I believe. Not sure if it would work without an aerial feed present or...

Moving from Sky to Sky Freesat

Might be worth copying this over to the Audio Visual forum, Lucid who posts on there can tell you much more than I know, but my take on it as a DIYer would be you've got several options depending on budget and layout of the house... 1. Run cable from the dish to upstairs (2 cables if you want...

How to test LED bulb is smoothed or not?

Haven't tried, but I wonder what the reading would be if a DVM (set to measure capacitance) was applied to the connections of the lamp? I wonder if the DVM voltage would be high enough to forward bias the bridge rectifier inside and measure the cap...?

    clip-on adapter for universal SMPSU

These are normally used so the user gets 3 or 4 with each power unit, one for Europe, one for the UK, one for the USA etc. I don't think they can be bought on their own (sorry!), the best option would be to Google the makers name on the PSU itself, and buy another unit made by the same company...

My Breville used to trip my RCDs

Very odd! Did they all come from the same batch, do you know? Just wondering if they could have been stored somewhere damp or something... Are they all the same make and model? Bought new or used? Where from? All bought from the same source? Be interesting to see the results of connecting them...

Help with Wiring outdoor security light from a loft circuit?

TTC, yes, true enough, I hadn't thought of that. Two DP switches on a dual box? ;)

Help with Wiring outdoor security light from a loft circuit?

What you could do whilst working on it is remove the JB, relocate the switch box 3 or 4 inches lower, and replace the single switch with a two gang, and have one for the loft lights and one for the outside light. Bring the power cable, the cable to the loft light and a new cable run to the...

    Merry Christmas, everyone

Yes, same from me. I always learn something from Lucid's posts, truly a mine of information. Merry Christmas y'all :)

    Consumer Unit... too many Amps

I think 'all RCBO' is preferable to 'dual RCD', I wonder if it might become required in the next edition of the regs?? Just a moot question, but presumably it's possible to mix type A and type AC RCBOs so each circuit has appropriate protection, without one type effecting the other?

    Possible faulty circuit protector

Good work. replacement breakers are available brand new off the shelf from Screwfix, see: https://www.screwfix.com/c/electrical-lighting/mcbs/cat7230022?incomerfittingtype=plug_in&cm_sp=managedredirect-_-electrical-_-pluginmcb but, as mentioned, do think about having that lot updated to...

    Outdoor Socket

If it's just for a few Christmas lights, honestly, just use an extension lead. Seriously not worth the faff and expense of adding an outside outlet just for that, especially if you have to take the roof apart to get to it - what about the felt layer under the tiles? Or, put a socket on the...

    bill dispute with bulb

Ask them to communicate with you in English. Make it very clear that until they do, you will be unable to discuss the matter further with them. Meantime, don't pay them anything...

    LED strips on lighting circuit

Can the controllers be programmed for a slower/more gentle start? This is often a problem in electronics, and chips called 'hot plug controllers' are used to control the inrush current (which would otherwise be present to charge large value caps) when the thing is first connected/switched on...

    Dimmer help please

I think I can see the problem... :D

    Dimmer help please

Turn off the power, and take the fittings down. Likely you will find heat damage to the wires inside the light fittings (probably buried inside, directly next to the hot lamp holder) and/or the terminal blocks that join the flex to the circuit cables. Careful rewiring (or new lights!) as-needed.

Advice needed.. Should i move consumer unit?

The more major part of the job will be moving the electricity board's mains and the meter. When you rewire (which looking at the age of what is there, you will be doing as a part of a major house renovation) the new consumer unit can go wherever you want it to (within reason). Get in touch with...
