Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

I managed to put the beam in position and wonder whether it is too high. It is 12cm above ceiling binder and about 28cm from the bottom of the ceiling joists. The ridge height is 200cm so I reckon this is well within 1/3 of the ridge heigh which I am reading is an absolute must for rafter tie...

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

Thanks @cdbe. Would you use joist hangers or some brackets for the two incoming ones?

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

What if I install two ties instead of one in my original setup. I would spread the load more evenly.

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

Hmm interesting case. Can you explain a bit more or point me to a site that shows the solution?

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

@cdbe Many thanks for your advice. It is a chimney indeed. Would I be ok to then move the beam to the next to the left or the the following one as it seems to be passed the chimney there? That would extend the propping points of the path to a distance of 2.0-2.4m but should not change much I...

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

Any advice greatly appreciated. Is my idea of attaching 2x6 with these screws four each side ok? Obviously firstly notching the timber at the ends to match the pitch of the roof. I checked and it looks like the 4m long 2x6 C16 timber is about 20kg in weight so not adding a ton of weight and...

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

Should I be using hurricane straps to attach to rafters and 2x6 timber for the rafter tie since it needs to support the weight of an adult?

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

@Notch7 @cdbe @blup I have now confirmed that I will be able to get 4m timber up to the loft. What size timber would you advise to place to connect with 2x3 rafters and how would you do it? Also what height from the bottom of the rafter is it ok to install rafter tie? Some photos below showing...

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

By the way how would you then install the 4m beam spanning above the ceiling binder? Would it be directly to the rafters? If so what fixings? What size should the 4m beam be - 2 x 4? The rafters are 2 x 3. Saying that as I just realised there is a slight chance I can lift the 4m up to loft...

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

Why does the weight of the new timbers have to be at least as great as the weight of a man on the joists? This path is leading to heat pump and F&E tank so needs access.

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

The path will be 6x2 beams attached to perpendicular beams with standard loft boards on top. The new beams perpendicular to the path will be spreading the load mostly on the binder as the other sides at the far ends will be fixed to the rafters that reside on wall plates.

@blup Does the above make sense to you? Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

The ceiling binder in question (higher on the photo) is about 4m long and is fixed to external wall (not seen on the photo) and internal wall as seen on the photo.

Installing a beam to support loft inspection path

Hi, I am thinking of installing two 2 x 6 beams that would support short inspection path above insulation. They would be supported in the middle by 2 x 4 ceiling binder that rests on the inner and outer walls. The path would be constructed from two 2 x 6 beams about 1.6m long each and would be...

    Installing new rafter tie

Alternatively (if I cannot fit the 3.6m span beam as that is the measured span) is it ok to halve it and attach two sides to ceiling binder? This is not going to strengthen the rafter but at least it would mean I can construct the inspection path from it?

How do you attach the rafter tie to the rafters?
