    Flue gas water

Put a pan of icy cold water onto the gas flame - you're likely to see condensation on the outside of the pan until it warms up. As said, it comes from the gas combustion.

    Something for lovers of Excel

The formula I wrote works in my PC. I can't see why your computer should be different. Try copying it and pasting it into your worksheet: =((J20-J19)*1.02264*39/3.6*P19/100)+((DATEDIF(K19,K20,"d"))*P20/100)

    Something for lovers of Excel

How about: =((J20-J19)*1.02264*39/3.6*P19/100)+((DATEDIF(K19,K20,"d"))*P20/100) Note that I've removed some of the brackets...

Replacement Plug O Ring Seal - Which size?

Your caliper gauge is being used wrongly and giving you the wrong reading. Put the thing you're measuring between the 2 parallel jaws ( facing down in your photo) which will measure the diameter .... assuming the jaws reach the middle ie diameter of the " plug".

    11 radiator to a 22?

Would you not be wiser to explain why he has the "wrong end of the stick" - you are asking for people's help after all.

Can you estimate old boiler efficiency from figures in the installation manual?

Thanks for correcting me - I was still half asleep!

Can you estimate old boiler efficiency from figures in the installation manual?

Watt is a unit of power. 747,000 Watts (747kW) is one Horse Power. To write "watt/hour" is like writing "Horse Power per hour". That has no meaning. 1Kw of power used over 1 hour will take 1kWh of energy.

Loud droning from new Vaillant system boiler

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, I can fire up the boiler and listen to the valves - they are all close together. Unfortunately, I struggle to tell where the noise is coming from. I tried listening though a screwdriver against the valve bodies, against the pipes, even against the boiler...

Loud droning from new Vaillant system boiler

Thank you for you reply. No, there is no external automatic bypass. I was suspicious of this 10 years ago but our plumber assured me that Vaillant's internal one was adequate and if there were 2 bypasses, "they would fight one another....." Your experience tells you that's not going to happen -...

Loud droning from new Vaillant system boiler

We had a new Vaillant EcoTec Plus 612 system boiler installed in February. Occasionally, about once per week, we have experienced a very loud droning resonance in the pipework. This is savage enough to be heard through the house and felt on the pipes and boiler casing. It appears to be caused...

intermittent brown water from hot tap

I don't think it started suddenly - I had suspicions for a couple of weeks that something had changed in the water colour - how long that had been going on is impossible to guess. After I noticed it, the effect was consistent, ie not re-occurring. Initially, I assumed the water supply had...

intermittent brown water from hot tap

Yes, I eventually found a stainless steel one which cost a bomb........ No problems since then.

intermittent brown water from hot tap

You probably have an unvented cylinder with expansion vessel. It is possible you have a leak in the expansion vessel diaphragm, allowing the water to reach the steel surface and pick up rust with its colour. That happened to us and the bath water looked very yellow/brown (before I even got...

Vaillant condensate trap has rust in it

I was curious to know if the rust implies a serious fault. There is no way I would "tinker" with the boiler beyond checking this trap - which was shown to me by a Vaillant repair chap.....

Vaillant condensate trap has rust in it

Hello, today I cleaned the condensate trap of our EcoTec Plus 618 which is 11 years old. The plastic is discoloured orange and there was about 4mm of black rust granules at the bottom of it. Does this mean the burner chamber (or whatever it is called) is rusting? Does it indicate I need to...

Help with Rehau wet underfloor heating system

Hello. Unless I'm mistaken, you can adjust the flow to each circuit using the square brass bit with the pin sticking, through visible in your photo under the thermo head. Because there are no flow indicators, it's impossible to know how to balance the flows, however .........

Magnum 'intelligent control' thermostat - automatic mode

If it's a smart controller, it will decide when to come on in order to achieve the required temperature at the set time. The instruction manual says, "3.4 Intelligent function: The thermostat has a self thinking and adaptive system. This function enables the thermostat to calculate when it...

    MVHR's Are they worth it

I agree totally with MJN's comments above. We have a Vent Axia Sentinel Kinetic in our house built 10 years ago. (I'm not a salesman for Vent Axia and know of other, possibly better, machines!) People worry about the electricity consumed by the HRV unit, so I put a meter on it for a year and...

    Storage heater heat loss

Let's imagine you get in the habit of covering and removing the insulation as you say. One day something will cause you to forget. A breakdown on a journey, an emergency at friends or relatives - even going away on holiday and the excitement of the departure. If there is a possibility of...
