    How much PTFE is needed

Being a DIYer I perhaps do this incorrectly, but I use slightly fewer turns than D&D - maybe 4-ish. I find a pull on the final turn beds in the tape. I also put 2 turns around the olive or any other mating faces (I am thinking of the 'bullet' type ends to some tails). I have not had a leak yet...

    electricians advice

Yup - last order arrived after two days, a mis-picked item was replaced by hand - on the same day, IIRC - the only (minor) nark was thet they didn't include a copy of their catalogue. I am about to use them again, and I am happy to recommend.

    Flueless Gas Fire..... controversy please

...based on the foregoing useful contributions, we have now rejected the prospect of Flueless, primarily due to the additional, awkward, and drafty ventilation requirements; secondarily due to the prospect of condensation problems; and thirdly the vague suspicion that the safety case is not yet...

    electricians advice

Thanks for the useful comments on my DIY job, which I posted for comparison against the more <ahem> professional job - I guess I got off lightly so far (mind you I haven't felt Ban's hot breath on my neck yet.... ) FWL.... yes I think you and securethingy are right. I will redo the...

    electricians advice

This all makes my amateur DIY job look fairly polished...well at least not unreasonable (though some of the purists out there might like to comment). Seriously though - if anyone can spot anything amiss here I'd like to know....

    Flueless Gas Fire..... controversy please

Hi - it looks like it has been a while since any questions were asked here about flueless gas fires, and I'd like to tap into the collective view. In my immediate circle I have had a very diverse response to the suggestion of installing a decorative secondary heating appliance in my lounge...

    Radiator replating.....calling Eddie M

Hi Eddie, (or anyone else who has done this) In a previous posting regarding radiators, you said: "I had ours re-plated, cost about £50 for 7 to be plated in satin brass". Can you please elaborate? Who might be able to do this? (I can find plenty of zinc plating outfits.) Is it...

    Wooden Sockets & Switches

..no I am not going to get defensive about it (no really... I'm not) Well, those are two definites against. Thanks Ban, Crafty an' all. Perhaps I'll have to review my intentions. I thought they might look quite good with fairly natural looking timber furniture. I hadn't actually seen...

    Wooden Sockets & Switches

Any comments please on wooden faced socket outlets and switches, comme ca..... I'd like to know if they: 1) Show impact & wear more than conventional plastic (e.g. finger marks, plug impact dents) 2) Have any safety implications (e.g. possibly relating to flex/cable fires) I am...

    Finally 'Beamed up'

Yup - it is sad to see him go, but even sadder (for me) is that his character was one of my formative influences as a growing lad - so, yes, I studied engineering, work in engineering for an engineering company. ...never made it on to a spaceship though :(

    Stuck MR16 dichroic

Yup - some very sensible ideas here - I appreciate the response. I will leave things alone 'til the bulb (i.e. capsule) goes. Cheers.

    Stuck MR16 dichroic

Thanks guys - these are 12Volt types, so presumably pull out? The problem is getting any purchase either to twist - or more likely - to pull. It was whilst tinkering with a small pen-knife blade (trying to get behind the bulb and between the bulb and the shroud), that the glass disk 'just...

    Stuck MR16 dichroic

Hello all, A light fitting with MR16 dichroics seems to have a stuck bulb. I was under the impression that these were just pull-out :?: The shrouds around each bulb are one-piece, with no apparent option to dismantle the shroud. The bulbs are recessed into the shroud. There is a circular...

    Puzzle

Like mapj1 - this does not ring particularly true to me either. The story sounds a bit wonky. You should note that public use mobile phones don't use these bands - but perhaps your advisor meant the TETRA system - a sort of mobile phone for the police and other services, etc. See...

Hot Cup = Heat Stain (in Ducal Top) = Dog House

Thanks for the advice. Very interesting idea....... Please see below for the degree of <ahem> success  I had with the cigar ash and (olive) oil approach. These photos were taken after the application. The improvement is unfortunately nothing. I would be grateful for any further...

    isolator between cu and meter

    isolator between cu and meter

SEC = Southern Electricity Contracting ..... or at least it is down my street in deepest sunny Hampshire (where the men are men, and the sheep are scared, etc., etc.) ...or was there more behind your question SS?

    isolator between cu and meter

You okay Ban :?: You've been as grumpy as Breezer in your last few posts .........

    isolator between cu and meter

.....oh, and keep the fuse in your pocket while you work. This avoids 1) losing it, and 2) the highly embarrasing effect caused when a helpful assistant re-inserts the fuse before you are ready. You might also like to check that the fuse rating agrees with that on the holder label (mine didnt!)

    isolator between cu and meter

I have the benefit that my fuse is in the outside meter cabinet, over which I have absolutely no control in the event that a scallywag may wish to some and interfere with me (as it were). I can (try) to deny it was anything to do with me, guvnor. You might wish to check though that the meter...
