    Downstairs Floor Replacement

I could look into using hangers, my thought was to wrap the new ends in DPM lightly tacked on further back and then sit in the wall, do you think this will suffice instead of hangers? I will bear the centres in mind I did think they were perhaps a little excessive but I was playing...

    Shower Install

The compression fittings are pretty easy to get the hang of and you can get them pretty cheap from screwfix etc. You could go buy one and do some practice onto a piece of copper pipe, you obviously don't have the advantage of knowing it's water tight when practicing but if it isn't when you try...

    Downstairs Floor Replacement

I've had a surveyor out who has been under the floor and inspected. He indicated that four of the joist ends on the kitchen side wall need replacing (the kitchen has a concrete floor and a retaining wall) The surveying company were charging an arm and a leg for what is essentially a basic rip...

How do you check the alarm cable cores ?

I wasn't saying you are wrong mate and I'm open to suggestions I just didn't think it would make a huge difference but if you say it will then I will take what you say on board. I wasn't trying to put the cat amongst the pigeons I was just trying to answer the chap's question from my own humble...

How do you check the alarm cable cores ?

A 6v lantern is what, 1100mah so it is probably just as likely to burn out a shorted cable as a 12v 1200mah SLA. Although yes the SLA would probably be more damaging the maximum current drawn on a line by a domestic burglar alarm is normally going be around 250mA so either battery is in excess...

    Advise plaese

I would say so, it may be that what has already done would benefit from a quick re-coat also but obviously I have not seen the job. Ask around for a reputable local painter or even a handyman of the 'no job too small' variety who will normally be happy to do the work. As mentioned if you get...

    Advise plaese

Tricky ground, have you paid the chap for the whole job? If not I would say pay him a percentage of the agreed price based on what he has done but if the he can't keep a schedule and respect you as a customer then get another painter in who is prepared to get it done to an agreed schedule for an...

Mains pressure hot water & heating system WHAT PRICE?

I'm not in the heating trade so I can't quote you for your install but I have however just had an install done myself by helplink. The install was removal of an old multi point water heater, install of a new Worcester bosch 30cdi under the stairs. 6 radiators and a chrome towel rail, all...

General advice on chasing in pipework needed.

It's not a rule it's just prefered by most plumbers I have ever dealt with. Some have said the copper pipe is more robust against accidental damage, others just because it looks better especially with radsnaps due it not being as flexible.

General advice on chasing in pipework needed.

I would say your best option for the radiator in that case would be to get some chromed 15mm copper. Use this for the tails out of the radiator down to the floor. You can then connect this onto the PVC pipe with a pushfit or compression fitting, bear in mind the pushfits tend to have a larger...

    Change upvc door lock type

I can't say I have ever seen a uPVC door with a lever key/mortice styled lock before, are you able to post a picture as a reference point? I know you can get a mortice profile lock with a eurocylinder mechanism which can be fitted into a wooden door in place of an existing lever mortice...

A rated double glazing - is it a con?

I had the whole house done recently by a company called west yorkshire windows who were an absolute breath of fresh air to deal with from start to finish. The advisor who came out initially explained that the minium standard allowed is E rated windows. Their standard windows are C rated but they...

General advice on chasing in pipework needed.

You can get plastic covered copper piping which I believe is suitable for concreting over. You can also use the PVC piping. The tails out of the radiator should be copper which you can then connect onto plastic with pushfit or compression connectors. Personally if it is possible I would...

have we caused damp? how do we fix it?

I'm no expert on the subject, I would say it may have been advisable to put a french drain of orts on the house side of patio using gravel however if the highest point of the paving is below the DPM of the wall and the tide mark has not progressed higher than the DPM then generally you should be...

How do you check the alarm cable cores ?

When testing for breaks in the cores in alarm cable (6 core) I have always cut back the ends slightly and spliced the cable together at one end in pairs and then got my multimeter on the other end on continuity mode and tested each core to each other core in turn. In this test each core should...

    Running phone cable outside

Ideally you should use the same BT spec drop cable for any external runs on the consumer side. You can buy the stuff on ebay by the metre just search BT external cable. i'm making the assumption this is an NTE5 master socket (google for pictures) which will make it easy. If you remove the...

    Downstairs Floor Replacement

Hi all, i'm after a bit of input/advice on replacing my living room floor. I'm an engineer by trade and although not a builder or carpenter my building and carpentry skills are pretty good. I will tell you the plan I have and I would appreciate any comments you guys can give me. The...

    Best UPVC cylinder lock?

I rate the Avocet ABS locks pretty highly, you can pick up a pair that are keyed alike for <£90 if you look around. I have used a company called ToughLocks in the past who are reasonable. The fact you can't (legitimately) get an additional key made without the pparterningcard for the lock is...
