    DNO Workers?

It certainly does seem that whoever the DNO is are making what really is a quite a simple job very difficult! Is the cutout and old cast iron metal clad type? I’d understand the need for cutting the service outside for isolation then. As for mouse droppings in the cupboard? Really!? I know...

    Russ Andrews super Fuse !!

Seeing as a lot of homes are supplied by cabling and switchgear as old at the 1930’s, none of these ‘superior’ products do nothing!

    DNO magic words

The supply looks pretty standard, from the pole is twin (probably 35mm) ABC, then it is what is called lead ins going underneath the soffit and into the meter position. The ABC isn’t really that old, maybe 15/20 years? Before it would of been twin open wire from the pole. The cable going to the...

    Incomer through footings

It ideally needs relocating to a new position, called a service alteration by the DNO. I’ve seen it before when someone’s had an extension build over the supply cable and it’s failed a few months down the line and is a big messy hassle to sort out to get the power back on. Best to move it

A cracked plug socket which I use a lot for fan-heater.

I can see exactly what’s happened here, that socket does indeed look new- albeit a cheap brand. The plug could not have been changed as when plugged into the new socket, still created a poor connection due to previous heat damage and thus caused it and the socket to overheat again. You can see...

Storage heater bills are incredibly high!

Last time I looked at changing mums tariff a couple of months ago I just couldn’t find one that had a cheaper night rate, it used to be something like 14p day 9p night per unit but now it’s the same or very close for night and day rate and that’s 20p+ a unit. I’d check your tariff and now much...

    16mm Tails feeding next door?

It is a standard looped supply that feeds you and next door, their supply will be a maximum of 60a. If they want to have a car charger fitted then the installer will most likely insist on them having their own dedicated 100a supply and won’t fit the charger. If they get a charger fitted and run...

Rayburn regent back boiler pipe work

Ok, I’ll have to try and get a better look when I’m over there. Thanks.

Rayburn regent back boiler pipe work

Hi, it is but via a small black tank which seems to have a 15mm feed to it off each big pipe going to/from the Rayburn. Difficult to say exactly how it’s set up without being there

Rayburn regent back boiler pipe work

Hi, at mums house there is an old Rayburn Regent solid fuel which was probably installed in the 60’s. It works well enough but today we noticed damp below where the back boiler pipe work goes up to the hot water tank so I ripped off the boxing and found this. It seems to be an old tee fitting...

    Potential No Main Earth

It looks like the lead sheath of the incoming supply cable has a clamp on it which indicated that it has either been connected up as part of the bonding or was providing the main earthing via the lead cable sheath. I’d give the DNO a ring to get it tested and if the earth loop reading is good...

Old ladies E7 & meter change?

I don’t like that smart meters can be turned off remotely when there’s some sort of problem with the account etc, imagine leaving an elderly person to try and go through all the call centre malarkey with their energy provider to try and get their power back on and all the stress this could cause...

PME earth electrode found under pavement

Well according to a now retired linesmen I worked with who had received an 11kv shock via a tree that was leant on the live overhead, it doesn’t shock it ‘crawls through you’

PME earth electrode found under pavement

This is part of SSEN procedure too, has been a thing for 6 or so years now, wasn’t done when I did my training though!

PME earth electrode found under pavement

You must be right next to the pot end, they are on the end of every CNE cable (3phases plus combined neutral/earth on a PME system

    Tiling around bath problem

How big is the gap? My bath ended up similar in the inside corner at one end, in all honesty it didn’t make a difference once tiled and sealed

    Unknown Cable or Pipe

Call the DNO, it will be the supply cable to the house and is most likely live. That time of cable was used up until around 1971 when concentric took over. It will most likely need diverting into a new meter position as if built over could present a massive headache if it faults as it would...

    100amp fuse overload

I’d say a 7 way ryfield distribution unit supplied by 95mm cable would be what’s needed, a standard 3 phase supply would struggle, you’d have to share two of the phases not to mention overloading the neutral conductor

    Resistor hot in bathroom extract

This reminded me of the extractor fan in my dads shower room when I was a teenager. It was similar to your one and ended up having a browned resistor shaped mark on the casing, I guess they are much the same just a bad design

Has anyone fitted a towbar to a 2009 Clio diesel estate?

I can’t help with the car itself but when I fitted a towbar and electrics to my 2013 Honda CRV I just wired it via a bypass relay. The CRV seems to have a computer for everything and I tried to test things to see what wire did what lamp (indicator, brakes etc) before I decided on a bypass relay...
