    Contacting DNO to fit isolator

Oh and you do need to ask if it's ok I turn it off, not doing so will just annoy the customer/sparky and lessen your chances of a cup of tea :D

    Contacting DNO to fit isolator

No it isn't, by rights he should have put the martindale socket tester in a socket to check things were correct before powering down then: Wear full face mask , flash jacket and rubber gloves to pull the cutout fuse after snipping seals. Remove neutral tails and any earth wires from the...

This could have been a tragedy!

 Don't like british gas, all their engineers keep doing is breaking our cutouts!!

Earth Wire Essential Or Not For External Security Light?

Well i'd of thought that it is essential that it is earthed- to prevent anything becoming live in the event of a fault. When I Moved into my house it had a floodlight wired in 2 core joined onto another bit of 2 core with these of all things rated at 12V...

    Found this on my travels

Well they did have an overlay program going where they were going to overlay the lot but it kinda fizzled out for one reason or another but they did get some done- mainly in a few known problem areas. Yes those old grey shelled resin joints- it just goes porous.

    Meter Tails

Well, it was installed by linesmen so what can you expect? ....jokes

    Found this on my travels

Yes, it is. The old PILC cables are infact much better than the cheap plastic cr*p we put in today and it shows. It's only really the joints that cause faults. I've worked on plenty of cables that must date back to the 30's and they are in as good condition under the lead as the day they were...

    Found this on my travels

Well It had a 60A fuse which blew and got changed and got put in for an upgrade to 100A. I Changed it because it was leaking pitch out the bottom and the terminals were too small to accept 25mm tails so putting a 100A fuseholder on it wouldn't of gained much :)

    Yeah good fun it was!

    Found this on my travels

Well, it looks like in the past someone has decided to convert in to 'PME' by bonding the lead sheath to the neutral and sticking a pme lable in there by the earth block, not sure why this was done as the EFLI test on the sheath returned 0.41 ohms. I can only assume that at one time it was worse...

    Found this on my travels

House was in a timewarp and that included the electrics, Wooden MEM fusebox, vir tails, no doubt vir wiring throughout and round pin sockets. I came to change the cutout and am thankful that our responsibility ends at the meter and i didn't need to even touch anything after! They have had a...

    Identify the cut out.

I changed two of these cast iron type cutouts last week, one was split phase the other single Phase. I doubt the neutral is fused on the first pic as it would have two fuse holders that's got a neutral block, the dno should change them though, they've done their time. meter fitters tend to s**t...

    New Light Smelling - Why?

I have something similar in the kitchen its just a 3 spotlight unit with low energy bulbs similar to yours and the bulbs used to stink like that when it was new and two of the bulbs expired quite early on. As of now (i think i installed it in 2007/8) one of the original bulbs is still working...

    DP fusing

Is that an overhead supply? If so i guess they just used the same coloured lead in's from the connection outside on the wall or wherever it is....

    Feed to Garage

Just one thing to consider- looking at the picture of your cutout and main earth etc, That main bare earth which is plummed onto the lead looks quite small and also from experience that cutout will only have a maximum of a 60A fuse inside. I'd mention this to the sparky and possible get the DNO...

    new meter has no off-switch

This is one thing i don't understand- My meter order form at work has various types of meters on it and there is a few single phase ones and one says '1 ph adaptive with isolator' and theres '1 ph 1 rate' both essentially do exactly the same thing but one type has a built in isolator- the ampy...

    DP fusing

Me and my work colleague changed an old cast iron cutout a couple of months ago and it had re-wireable fuses on pole the live and the neutral. It was so old we think the service cable feeding it might of been jute (jute string insulation soaked in oil rather than papers) No one really knows they...

    What supply type is this?

hmm i wonder how (or if) they managed to fill that cutout with pitch? seems an awkward way of installing it!

    Plug-in car heaters

I had one in my old car and used it when the heater matrix decided to break. Put it this way- I would of been better off sitting round a cigarette for warmth!

    Does anyone remember?

I found one of these things when clearing out my uncles old shed and it's in the loft being used to power two 60w bulbs instead of one :P
