Repainting nicotine stained white gloss woodwork!

If nicotine and tar did that to the skirtingboards, you don't like to think what they did to the guy's lungs... :(

How to clean Black Exhaust Staining from Pebbledash

Your only options as to paint it with masonry paint (and expect to have to renew it every 2 years), or pick off all the pebbledash and have it re-done ...but it will only get mucky again so I would go with masonry paint option. If it were stone you could have it sandblasted, but it's quite a...

    Emulsion over previously wallpapered walls

I think the problem with F & B emulsion is its inconsistency (some colours go on beautifully and cover solidly with 2 coats; other take up to 5; three is typical)... and the fact that some of the claims they make about it are patently untrue. For example, they claim the estate emulsion has no...

Matt Emulsion over Silk = flaking paint. How to remedy?

Sand to remove any flaking paint and to provide a key. Apply two coats of Zinsser Gardz. Allow to dry. Apply matt emulsion.

    Long narrow room

Absolutely! All the more reason to put your foot down at this stage and tell her to put up with it as it is and abandon all your notions of fancy wallpaper until it is all re-built. The wallpaper you choose now will only go out of fashion, anyway. Better to wait. Have a grafitti wall instead.

    Exterior paint flaking

OK, I give in. What is the connection between the two identical photographs and your question?

    Long narrow room

You are clearly delusional about what building work entails. Please be assured that (i) the papered wall will be wrecked, whatever you agree with the builder (ii) there will be plaster residue everywhere for about 3 months afterwards (iii) you will wish you had just left it as it was...

    Can I paint fireboard?

Painting fireboard is not advisable, no. However, it will be devaluing the property. Consider pulling it down and replacing with a car port or a brick-built garage, which will add value.

Also bear in mind that large floral patterns are going out of fashion now.

    Best Bathroom Ceiling Paint?

I recommend Zinsser Permawhite for any bathroom ceiling where there is the remotest chance of condensation/mould appearing. It can be tinted to most pastel tones.

    Little Green paint

I agree with dcdec about ceilings in most rooms, but I would use Intellimatt on kitchen and bathroom ceilings as it's tougher and more steam-resistant than most other emulsions.

    Long narrow room

Is it worth it, just for a room you keep cats in? Seriously...I wouldn't be spending £65 per roll on paper if the room is to be pulled around again soon. Just paint the short walls with a dark colour and the long wall with a pale one and save your money until you've done the building work.

    permawhite in bathroom

Mistcoat any bare plaster, then apply 2 coats of undiluted Permawhite.

    Woodchip !

Horrible stuff. It is the decorating equivalent of vomited porridge.

    damaged wallpaper

The shape created by your son's tearing is actually more aesthetically interesting than the original surface. I don't blame him for trying to improve it. Make a feature of it.

    removing emulsion paint

Don't try to remove it - you'll be there for ever. Sand thoroughly, apply a good quality waterbased undercoat and two coats of waterbased gloss/satin/eggshell trim coat, and it will be fine.

    Colours

Don't just go for 'the most common'! Go for something which complements the age, materials and style of your house. Also bear in mind the colours of neighbouring doors - try not to clash with them. If you give us a brief description of the front of the building (or a photo, even better)...

You're right. Apologies! (But there's no need to be quite so anally retentive aboiut it).
