weird grinding/howling/airplane boiler noise, appears only when Hot Water is demanded..NOT kettling!

Hi all, as perhaps this is my 100th post about something related to out kitchen renovation, I won't start this post by saying "we are doing a kitchen renovation..." Our Vokera EasiHeat Plus25C, a three or four years old combi boiler, has been temporarily decommissioned (three months)...

Kitchen sink: Bottle trap or P/S trap?

I actually already own one of those McAlpine connectors, it was used in the previous setup for WM and boiler condense to discharge in the drain stack. (actually, more on the boiler condense later on..) I hear you about having the trap as close as possible to the sink drain, however, if I were...

Kitchen sink: Bottle trap or P/S trap?

@Nige F good observation. You guys are making me think. Of course deciding on the shelves is the missus domain, but surely the more clearance we have under the sink the better it is. As I'd like to have access to the trap to clean it once in a while, that being a bottle or a P/S, I thought I...

Kitchen sink: Bottle trap or P/S trap?

in the process of fitting new plumbing for the kitchen waste. I read quite some opinions online of people who wouldn't fit bottle traps under a kitchen sink, but rather P trap or S trap. They claimed it fills up with gunk very quickly. I am not one of those people that uses a sink as an...

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

This thread has escalated quickly! Thank you all for your inputs really, I tried to read through the other pages of interesting dissertation but unfortunately my mind could only absorb so much. Thanks @JohnW2 . (let me be nosy and ask you, I imagine you are the same John W[...] sat by the...

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

Thank you for being pedantic (I am one myself) and thanks for correcting my terminology. Just so we are on the same page, I am all about safety and thanks to the inputs of you guys I am understanding it is next on the list to call our own indi leccy to come round and convert all of the CBs to...

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

very informative, thank you. It is actually on point information, as one of the plasterer got electrocuted meanwhile plastering the ceiling! The lighting CB (without RCD) tripped and he wasn't seriously injured luckily.

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

sorry for being pedantic, but I really like a fully understaning! I am aware that is unrealistic to think to have a load of more than 60A on 3 rings, but if it were to happen, would the RCD blow? Or is it as @AndyPRK points out, the main house fuse will probably be only 60A, so that fuse would...

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

Hey @Taylortwocities thanks for the explanation. I am aware an RCD protects only in case of residual current mismatch and not over load. Does it mean that if the RCD contacts are rated at 60A, they are potentially at risk, seeing that the 3 rings can each go up to 32A before the circuit is...

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

so what does the RCD rating of 60A stands for? I am one who likes to understand things rather than just being told it's OK and I can sleep tight at night. I haven't got a paper from the leccy. I will check with my partner if she has any idea about it. Alas the leccy came with the builder so we...

    1. Lighting circuit safe area, does it need RCD? 2. RCD maximum current smaller than combined rings

Looking at that eyesore of our CU, I noticed that the RCD (which protects only kitchen, upstairs and downstairs rings) is rated for 60A when the circuit breakers are 32a each. Is that a problem? I am aware that it is unrealistic to have 3*32A=96A at any given moment, but it is theoretically...

engineered T+G floor: seamless plywood vs many separate strips? + underlay

hi @foxhole Thanks for the reply about the underlay. About the small strips: surely you mean the other way round, i.e. if small strips are used and subfloor has any curve, they will more likely to follow the curve as opposed to one big sheet of ply?

engineered T+G floor: seamless plywood vs many separate strips? + underlay

Hi all, we ordered some numbers of samples from different shops of engineered t+G oak floor. All of the samples we received (bar one) have the ply substrate made out of thinner strips laid next to each other, as opposed to one unique piece of plywood. On the other hand, when I look online at...

gas hose size - bore 9.5mm or 16mm?

What''s more amusing: I am looking now at the SF website on my computer. I was able to find easily part nr 33878. Bayonet connection, internal bore diameter 12.5mm. Essentially equal to a 15mm copper pipe. Smartphones are the work of the devil, I keep repeating that. What a palaver I made!

thank you for spotting my typing mistake(s) Ian, I have corrected it(them).

gas hose size - bore 9.5mm or 16mm?

from gas metre, 20 m effective length in 28mm pipe to come to a Tee: one end of the Tee 4m effective length in 22 mmpipe run to end up in a 25kW boiler. The other end of the Tee is probably 3 or 4m of effective length in 15mm copper pipe Then it would be connected to cooker with 1/2 inch hose...

gas hose size - bore 9.5mm or 16mm?

no, that was the past story, gas pipes re-laid and boiler installed and some water feeds and radiator feeds. The matter of present times is a cooker being installed. At last. I hope.

gas hose size - bore 9.5mm or 16mm?

it does beg the doubt. However in my case, I can see why they have done it: bought parts from SF for a certain amount, plus the quote for gasman to do all the gas work and boiler (labour only), the total was a decent sum, not too large not too small. As we know and trust the man, not worth the...

gas hose size - bore 9.5mm or 16mm?

the run from the tee (feed to the T is 28mm pipe over a run of 20m effective length) is probably 3 or 4m of effective length in 15mm copper pipe Then it would be connected to cooker with 1/2 inch hose which SF claims it has 9.5mm bore size; length of hose is 1m

gas hose size - bore 9.5mm or 16mm?

I am perhaps over-complicating this. Reading the manufacturer instructions for the hose with the bigger bore size, it is not OK to be installed with free-standing cookers. Well. 9.5 will it be then. Still would be great to have your guesses on what are the numbers next to the injectors...
