Radiators on when hot water is on

Also check which end of the radiators get hot first - is it the same as when the CH is on or the opposite end. If opposite then it's prob reverse flow.

Where do I install this rail. Dilemma.

I vote for the screws and rail along the grout line then the shower head will be central. In any case you can angle the shower head so it doesn't play directly on the screen.

Waste drain outdoors - what are my opions?

Yes - you need to cut a hole in the grid so the pipe goes a little below the grid. That will stop what looks like splashing on the wall.

Central heating "Copper down to plastic impact" and "central heating pipes outside" query

The inserts in the plastic pipe are only about a cm, presumably the rest of the plastic pipe is about the same ID as the copper so the resistance to flow is not that bad. I'd turn off the radiators in the upstream bedrooms as a start and slowly open them a little at a time until you get all...

Battery BBQ spark igniter - earth connection ?

I tried the spark generator with surprising results. Without any wires connected the spark leapt across the terminals on the device itself indicating one is negative and the other two positive. With one electrode connected - no spark at the electrode ! But a spark leapt between the other two...

Battery BBQ spark igniter - earth connection ?

I guess the spark generator has metal just below the plastic or the plastic itself conducts at HT voltages to complete the return path. The term earth is used where the return path for a circuit uses the body of the car or BBQ panels. It gets confused with proper earth grounding used in other...

Battery BBQ spark igniter - earth connection ?

Just bought one of these battery electric spark BBQ igniter. It has 3 outlets for connection to electrodes. I intend to replace the pizzo igniter which is a bit weak. My question is where is the return path for the high voltage spark to work ? The unit seems to be all plastic, even where it...

Aerial signal variation during the day

We moved here in 1987 and the aerial was already here ! So near enough 40 years. I am surprised it still works. In fact things got better when we went digital because you don't get ghosting. The UHF Y splitter is ok as it has 1 male (aerial input) and two female uhf (outputs to TVs). There are...

Aerial signal variation during the day

Thanks ! Checked again today and the signal is fine so it probably is the aerial or cable giving an intermittent fault. I will change to f type splitter and other connections and go from there.

Aerial signal variation during the day

We have a very old TV aerial with the lead coming down in the garage. In the garage there is a uhf Y splitter with one feed going through the wall into the adjacent lounge to a TV only about 2 metres . The other feed goes across under the floor about 12 meters to a second TV in the kitchen...

Double socket spurred off consumer unit?

Ok - yes you can have a spur off a ring main. I didn't appreciate that a spur directly of the MCB is the same as a spur anywhere on the ring main.

Double socket spurred off consumer unit?

Don't forget the basics ! A socket in a ring i.e with 2 x 2.5mm cables needs to be protected by a 30amp breaker. A socket with a single 2.5mm cable needs a 15amp breaker. To extend a ring in the garage would need two cables going into each socket. With a 15amp breaker you can have a radial...

Overflow on main water tank issue

The inlet is higher than the overflow. The old float valve did drip even when fully closed and it was pretty gunged up so may have stuck slightly open. We'll have to do an overflow test to see what happens but he is just wants to let things dry out for a few days.

Overflow on main water tank issue

My friend had a water leak from the main cold tank which we fixed by replacing the float valve (ball cock). What is mysterious is that the tank leaked so he had a dripping ceiling. There was no water out of the overflow which appears to have an elbow bending into the water and a little canister...

    Mounting stainless steel bathroom cabinet.

There is a particular problem with stainless steel bathroom cabinets because the sheet metal is flexible. Here are a few tips : 1 Remove the doors by demounting the whole hinge from the cabinet - the hinge will not separate easily because of the closing dampers. 2 After temporarily mounting the...

New Boiler Installation - Messy Job - Almost a disaster

He has used end feed soder fittings which are cheap but need expertise. I used the ones with a ring of solder built in but then I am only DIY. Maybe he didn't use flux ? Or clean the fittings and pipe with wire wool?

    shower pump pipework

If the pump is in the airing cupboard, short runs of 15mm should be ok - this is what I have. It is best to have short runs on input side of the pump and longer runs on the delivery side.

Help needed to operate central heating

If you have three valves, you prob have 3 zones. HW, UFH and upstairs rads. Identify the the valve which heats the upstairs rads by observing which pipes get hot when the HW is on. Then trace the wiring from that valve to see what operates the valve. This may require looking inside a connection...

How would you deal with this cast iron bath

Support and protect the pipes as you say, remove the wooden frame - it won't fit the new bath although you could reuse the wood. Get some good ear defenders - the noise is horrendous! It's the first break that is difficult - you need a weak point to start, an edge or plug hole. After that it...
