I'd say that they have actually trimmed that quite neatly myself!

    Toilet Seat Question

You need a seat that is top fitting, ie does not have the nuts that you fix underneath. You can get this seat off by removing the screw that does work and then pulling it hard up whist unscrewing the other screw, that should work with less risk of damaging the toilet. There will be a plastic...

Any idea what these garden cables are for?

The other option is of course to keep digging and see where they go!

Shower tray raising kits-do they work?

I used a raising kit (designed specifically for my tray) and it works just fine.

External welcome lights - PIR plus override?

I have one of these and think its a great product: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Steinel-Wall-mounted-Motion-Sensor-IP54-360-degrees-outdoors-IS-NM-360-Black-/130903905770?pt=UK_Garden_Lighting&hash=item1e7a7b15ea Basically I have it set so it turns the lights on for 4 hours when it gets dark...

    tree growing in gully!!!!

That needs to come out, full stop. Even if the gully works now (which I doubt), those roots could be doing anything. It is simple enough to dig it out and fit a new plastic gully theoretically.

Should I remove the lathe and plaster ceiling?

Bring them down now, it's a messy job but one that is best done as early as possible during renovations. If you subsequently damage your new plaster boarded ceiling when doing the loft then it is easy enough to repair. Removing a lathe and plaster ceiling is undeniably messy work, but if...

    Mystery Pipe

Almost certainly an old sink in a bedroom, I bet you'd find notches for pipes in the joists below.

    Chromecast

I have 3 chromecasts scattered around the house and combined with a Plex server they make a very good and cheap way of streaming media about the house.

    Reducing water getting into cellar

Where is the damp problem showing itself? I'd start by doing the right things to restore a bit of balance, lower the outside ground level to where it should be. Cellars in old houses should be cold, if it's warm then there isn't enough airflow! They will also always be slightly damp as...

    magic eye tvlink

If you have a smart phone then the Sky+ app renders magic eyes useless. I have taken them all out of the house now and just use the phone to control the box.

    Data Storage.

Very debatable. Personally I'd be driven by cost and select the cheapest option, it sounds like you don't need that much storage. Also worth keeping the back up off site in case of theft/fire. Regularly test the back up media whatever you choose, as in the event of disaster it's a right...

    Open lock without a key

Now that the three screws have been removed the lock should come away from the door. Run around the edge of it with a knife as it looks like it would be stuck with paint then smack it with a hammer....

    Ash Vacuum Cleaner

I havent used one so can't comment. Long term I suspect the Henry is still the best bet as they don't break and if there is a problem you can repair rather than replace. Bags are also cheap and freely available.

    Odd Damp Problem

The lean to would probably have been the scullery and there would have been a fireplace in there as well as the kitchen. Personally I'd vent the unused stacks (even if it's externally) and might even pop a cowl on top of each stack. As well as reducing the rain that goes down the chimney it...
