    wot he said!

    Current on earth?

Which confused me. I would have expected to see some voltage on one of the earths. But something is clearly amiss if there is at times 20amps flowing between the two earths.

    Current on earth?

sorry bonding was disconnected eventually as were any other earths to avoid parallel paths, but the issue presented itself both with and without bonding connected

    Current on earth?

I measured for a voltage between the two earths but got nothing. I didn’t measure live to earth or neutral to earth though so I’ll do that tomorrow when I’m there.

    Current on earth?

Sorry should have mentioned that. Measured with a clamp meter, fluctuating rapidly, but around 20amps was the highest I saw. I did test the rod and that gave me a reading of 47 ohms. The substation is literally across the road, so I wouldn’t have thought there would be that much difference...

    Current on earth?

Okay, trying to get my head round this Commercial site (farm converted to shops, supply still from main farmhouse) 100amp 3 phase TNCS supply Issues started 3 weeks ago, cutout fuses blowing, replaced by DNO twice and then last week again, however this time arcing was observed from the main...

    3 phase residential /teleswitch heating

yep. I think the supplies originate from the days of DC supplies, which were often two lives and a neutral. Most supplies of this age have now had new cutouts fitted, and I don’t know any DNOs that stock the cutouts with two fuses and a neutral (though they are readily available) most likely...

Does armoured cable to Garage need to be buried?

I agree with other opinions as above, if it’s going to be buried it does need to be at a sensible depth. And warning tape over it regardless. If the existing gravel trench isn’t wide enough to excavate (hence why he may be going this route) then I would suggest running the armoured through a...

    Unlooping supply

was exactly what I meant. I wasn’t saying anyone is wrong, just sharing my experience. I seem to have ended up with lots of projects over the years with various DNOs and it’s amazing what you pick up

    Unlooping supply

0.0225 is the imperial equivalent (or near enough) of 16mm2. Normally Pilc cable which can be run at slightly higher loadings I seem to remember something about it not being the cables that are the issue, but the practice of using the cutout to loop as they often are. The old EON network manual...

    Sounds like a result then!

    Unlooping supply

Not sure on whether they would do it or not, but they could terminate the ‘loop’ external to her property and run a new cable to yours. However that does Leave a cable live but going nowhere so you can see why they might not he Keen the DNO does have a statutory power to access their equipment...

    Having DNO move incoming supply

I’m not saying it will work, but depending on the exact work needed, if you have a meter box ready to go, when they unloop the supply you may find the actual guys who turn up to do the job will move the cutout for you into the new box. Also depending on the work needed, it may actually be easier...

    Having DNO move incoming supply

I would think (from experience) shortening the cable would be no problem, however they may use the opportunity to remove the looped supply (they would normally do that part at their expense), I would mention it to them when you discuss the service alteration, they might not like having to do the...

    Having DNO move incoming supply

Run a submain from the meter box to the consumer unit. That way you can put the consumer unit where you want/where it suits to alter the existing cables to Cable should be between 450 and 600 deep, depending on what your DNO specifies, unless it’s agricultural land then it needs to be 1 metre...

    Having DNO move incoming supply

Who is your DNO? Some are quite helpful, however quite often they would want to relocate to an external box rather than internally. I have sometimes had them done free of charge, when I have supplied a meter box, there’s always a way

    Self Install Ev Charger

Down to the installer to assess if it is looped or not, or safe to fit an EV on a looped supply? I would say neither is in the remit of any installer, both would be down to the DNO When surveying for EV points, one of the things to check for is if the supply appears to be looped, this is then...

    Self Install Ev Charger

I would guess then that either the DNO has not been informed or if they have they are not bothered. Certainly any chargers fitted under the grant scheme have to be notified to the DNO and proof of this is sent in with the grant application otherwise they don’t pay! I can’t remember who insists...

    Self Install Ev Charger

As above you do need to declare an EV charger installation to the DNO. There are other considerations like if your supply is looped. You cannot connect a 7kw charger to a looped supply, though I believe the DNO is obliged to unloop supplies on request within a certain timeframe
