Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

Thanks for the heads up. Some panels such as the Honeywell have the ability to set the alarm output duration via keypad.

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

It's okay, I'm not ashamed to be a DIYer. Although bullying them doesn't encourage others to join this forum :D This argument is beginning to circle vis a vis my other thread regarding no evidence of anyone ever tampering with a domestic burglar alarm. Hmm. I'm a little worried that an...

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

I suppose you'd like me to buy one of your spread spectrum (do you know what that means) wireless alarms for £5000, rather than a big padlock for my garden gate?

Whats the proper way of connecting auxiliary sirens to an alarm?

Very probably you can dump the relay and connect directly. The only consideration would be total current capacity of the thing you are trying to connect. Check the panel specification in the engineer's guide or ask here. To confirm operation:- Set the meter for volts DC Put the red probe of...

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

Because I don't know the answer and have little experience of alarms. I asked specifically about cores for the sensors and hoped to get a professional's perspective. I'm not a professional, just a DIYer. It's sometimes difficult to keep these threads on track and they wander off topic...

Alarm insecurity - jamming, replaying and brute-forcing on the Yale HSA6400

If you secure your house with magnetic anomaly detectors, blast resistant windows and get yourself a Mossberg, you can easily improve the quality of your criminals if you're not happy with them...

Alarm insecurity - jamming, replaying and brute-forcing on the Yale HSA6400

I’m very confused with your comments, Cyber. I made my post on the understanding that you worked for Pen Test Partners. Do you not? Your original post says we’ve made a blog post that you then link to: https://www.pentestpartners.com/blog/alarm-systems-alarmingly-insecure-oh-the-irony by Andrew...

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

It’s going off topic from wire cores, but I’m having an episode… <rant> I wouldn’t have had to do all this damn upgrading if wired alarm panel technology wasn’t as crap as it is. The panels are very much outdated and lacking:- The tamper system is ill thought and laid out. Choc blocks...

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

Only ran them for 2 minutes. The total current draw is 2250 mA (a little difficult to measure) and I've fused for 6.3A fast. Hmm, perhaps I should lower that.

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

Europlex, this is the mod. Apologies for it's scrappy nature, my schematic package has thrown a wobbler. http://www.diynot.com/diy/media/alarm.97966/ So there are 2 bell boxes with each with 3 core cable. The reason that there is only one core for both the strobe and the sounder is that the...

Very well done for spotting that. There’s an obvious way to obtain the additional current I need. Can you guess? Hint, there’s a high current source within the main control panel that begins with the letter “B”

Can you imagine a scenario where it's both?

Tested and working fine, thanks. You do need sunglasses and ear plugs when you're running both bell boxes on the bench though.

    Beware! Win 10 Upgrade Compulsory!

Well that's only for Joe public. Win10 won't be rolled out in the Enterprise back end for years still. Big companies can turn off the compulsory upgrades anyway. It's bad press to take down a hospital's blood bank. That's how you get yourself onto Newsnight. Server 2016 isn't even out yet...

Alarm insecurity - jamming, replaying and brute-forcing on the Yale HSA6400

Mr Am makes a very good point. Building upon what he says; unless we’re talking about breaking into a bullion depository, the risk reward calculation works totally against the burglar in your scenario. The Strasser, Danev and Capkun paper is interesting, but is very much a theoretical research...

    Beware! Win 10 Upgrade Compulsory!

Honestly, I don't know. I suggest that they don't either. They probably can't decide a future strategy whilst witnessing the decline of their desktop. Don't be surprised, a lot of companies face these dilemmas. Look at the untenable market positioning of the Defender vehicle, and Argos'...

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

This is interesting. My bell boxes can operate without the internal battery connected. In fact, there is a factory jumper to specifically disconnect the internal battery. As the horns blare and the lights flash without a battery in place, that would then suggest the power is coming from the...

Just how many cores for a wired burglar alarm?

A standard core is about 0.15Ω/m. For my bell box runs, I'd drop 4.5V. Tricky with a 12V battery, hence current capacity comes into it somewhat. I too attach my panels to the wall, but then the wiring goes under /over the loft insulation, through the garage /workshop, through the garden to...
