Is there an opposite of soldering flux?

This is a bit of a curve ball. Is there a substance that can be applied to copper to prevent the spread /adhesion of solder? So if you apply this stuff, the solder would be repelled and the copper remains clean? Sort of a masking fluid /tape that withstands a blow torch. Anything at all?

    Anyone used a water level?

@bobasd Are you sure that would work over 6m? Line levels can't do 1 in 600 with any kind of certainty. That's < 0.1 degrees. The best box spirit levels (like Rabone /Stabila) are guaranteed for 1 in 2000, but cheepo line levels aren't guaranteed at all...

    Anyone used a water level?

@bernardgreen, so you have to leave it for ages? An hour? The 6m head creates ~60kPa which just seemed to keep expanding the uPVC hose as I was doing it on a very hot day in direct sunlight, against a hot brick wall. So both water levels just keep getting lower and lower... I'll try again...

    Anyone used a water level?

I've been guttering, and thought that I'd use a water level to ensure that the outflow is lower than the top of the guttering run. It's a 6m run, so I was aiming for a 10mm fall across it. The water level doesn't seem usable for one person up a ladder :( It might seem simple at first - water...

Can eaves protectors be installed by a typical DIYer?

@John D v2.0 Well yes. There is a Marley Modern tiled roof. One end is the end gable and the other is lead flashed against other masonry. At another area, there is a valley with one of those GRP valley trays. To go full width with the eaves trays, I'd need to re point and what about the...

Can eaves protectors be installed by a typical DIYer?

Bump as just about to order supplies, including wooden battens (thanks @catlad (y)). Will exclude eves protectors as it seems too hard...

Any suggestions for soffit detail please?

And , would you not bother with the 19 x 38 batten between the J channel and existing soffit? You'd just have a slightly sloping new soffit?

Any suggestions for soffit detail please?

@^woody^ , I love it thanks, but just a quickie... Would you glue the blue vent piece to the soffit board? This is what my sister has now, with a plastic vent and wooden soffit board. And she's experiencing soffit droop. As the wood's only clipped into the vent channel, over time it's...

Any suggestions for soffit detail please?

@bobsuerita, Well as for starting over, all the wood's good. It just looks tired. Ideally I'd like to over vent, but that unfortunately segues onto Can eaves protectors be installed by a typical DIYer? I fear that repointing and reflashing may be too much specialised work for me.

Can eaves protectors be installed by a typical DIYer?

There are many threads here regarding the installation of eaves protectors. And several videos on line. Just push back a few tile and hey presto! But what happens at the ends of the fascias? They never deal with the ends. One end might be flashed against another wall, and the other end is...

Any suggestions for soffit detail please?

My sister has the following existing fascia and soffit detail, and we're looking to cap over /under:- The loft is vented with a continuous run of 45mm wide slots along the existing wooded fascia, so I think that we have to keep ventilation. Also notice that the existing wooden soffit board is...

Is there a current view regarding Eurocell Ltd. fascias?

@mw, how would you say that Deeplas is better than Eurocell? Eurocell's stuff looks a lot better than the bent yellowed boards from Wickes.

Is there a current view regarding Eurocell Ltd. fascias?

I've been looking around (and on-line) for uPVC roof line products (fascias, soffits and guttering). I've been to Eurocell in Birmingham and their stuff looks very good. However, it seems the highest cost of anything I've managed to find on line. Swish, Freefoam and Wickes all seem to be...

What to do with messed up upstairs /downstairs socket circuits?

@plugwash The kitchen ring excludes the electric oven. The oven's on it's own circuit from another mini consumer unit, along with the immersion heater. Probably should have said that earlier. Does this change your opinion? PS. No, the sloppiness was not limited to mere labelling.

What to do with messed up upstairs /downstairs socket circuits?

Imagine a three bedroom house with an upstairs and downstairs, and a garage. It was build circa 1985. Imagine too a consumer unit with two breakers for all the sockets. Let's call them left and right. A. If you turn off the left breaker, all sockets upstairs go off. All sockets downstairs go...

Is there any form of transparent piping in standard diameters?

 You're making me clench. Imagine all those particles scrapping their way through the pump... Grind, grind grind. Crunch, crunch, crunch. £, £, £.
