Do you have to hardwire alarms?

I know someone who has their alarm plugged into a regular wall socket. Doesn't cause any problems whatsoever, but they have Tipexed "A" onto the plug so that you don't mess with it. Don't forget that if you unplug it, you'll know when you come to set it so that you can plug it in again. You...

Do EASYFIX plasterboard fixings actually work?

Nothing could be easier. Except when the screws don't go into the plugs. Well they do if you use a ½" ratchet. It takes so much force to drive the screw home that the plasterboard fails around the fixing. Screwfix man said he was unaware of this and I believe him. However, as I type this...

    Universal beam question

Seconded. Perhaps woody's time and others' could have been put to better use if you hadn't posted in the first place. Good people have replied 43 times to what seems now like a fake question.

    Universal beam question

Ooh! It had to happen one day. Congratulations, you're my first stalker. You're not going to steal things from my washing line are you  ?

    Universal beam question

I'm sorry Richard, this is how you size /budget a project? From some anonymous geezer on the internet? You probably realise that those UB/UC sizes above have a 250% range of strength /cost. The beam depth seemed of importance from your post, and some people were trying to help. I admire your...

    Universal beam question

Only in that you paid a lot extra for it over a UB. Roughly speaking, strength increases and deflection decreases exponentially with depth. So a beam twice as deep with be four times as strong. Don't they normally build dormer windows with wood?

    Universal beam question

A flag in the sense that why would a domestic customer pay lots extra for a simple beam installation when it's typical to use a UB? I would look at it closer. Unfortunately there are some builders who stick these things in "'cos we had one lyin' about". I saw one of these recently in a post...

    Universal beam question

I'm sorry, but it really wouldn't. Beams are not selected according to the weight acting on them. They are sized according to the maximum bending moment, shear force (not relevant here), effective length (which may /may not be the physical length) and deflection. Ascertaining the loads is...

    Universal beam question

You shouldn't use this as it's American. It assumes full lateral restraint (which you probably don't have), the default load factors won't apply, the steel is wrong for the UK, you have no idea of how they selected the beam size and the deflection criterion is probably wrong. Sorry.

    Universal beam question

Unfortunately you can't do this yourself. I suggest that you get a structural engineer to size this beam. He'll be able to eye ball it in minutes if he's any good. To get a building control calculation, he'll need to spend an hour. If you're lucky, a steel supplier might offer a service...

Do EASYFIX plasterboard fixings actually work?

They took them back at Screwfix and refunded me the entire cost. That was nice of them as I'd already used 9. The chap said that he wasn't product trained so couldn't advise me how to use them properly, but did say that he wasn't aware of other complaints on this item. He did say though that...

Any views on my loft boarding scheme?

I've just run some numbers regarding weights. It seems that the weight of additional CLS joists is only 15% of the total additional weight. The bulk (85%) of the new flooring weight will be due to the chipboard sheets. Total additional weight being approximately 15 kg/m2. That's lighter than...

Any views on my loft boarding scheme?

Frankly I don't know what to think with this. I actually bought a single box of Loftlegs to see what they're like. No ventilation gap with those according to their spiel. I also read about Loftzone, whose entire marketing message revolves around ventilated insulation. I can only assume that...

Any views on my loft boarding scheme?

Any reasons for this? It's funny how these questions begin to circulate. I'd be concerned about condensation on the underside of the Cellotex as it would be touching the top of the existing insulation. Especially with the metallic coating. There would be no ventilation gap as some people...

How do you get about after topping up loft insulation?

I was dreading this. I have a programme of alarm, CAT5 and CCTV wiring that I was going to roll out. I was being flexible as to what I did, kinda making it up as I went along, building upon the results. So this means all that has to be done and dusted prior to top up. And then no more...

How do you get about after topping up loft insulation?

I'd like to top up my loft insulation. It's 100mm presently, and I'll add another 170mm laid over it. I'll no longer be able to see the joists, or walk on them easily. What do people do about getting around the loft in this case? Is there some trade secret? Or. does the top up insulation...

    Perimiter IR Beams

Like this? Are you sure that my indoor wired application is suitable for these? All I could find was wireless and solar powered devices. My usage case is diametrically opposite to this

    AG6 Bell Box

Wot e sed. The internal battery is only for use in the case of a hoodlum cutting the cable to the bell box. If he cuts it, it will go off running from the internal battery. That means that the battery is constantly charged via the cabled 12 volts. If your AG6 is anything like my Honeywells...

Any views on my loft boarding scheme?

Does anyone have any comments (good or bad) for this scheme to board out a part of my loft:- I'm going with 38 x 89 CLS studs running at right angles over the top of the existing trusses. Topped with 320 x 1220 chipboard sheets. This will be the central third of the loft. The sheets will be...

Double Glazing - am I being fleeced

Yes, my awfully friendly Anglian rep tried that too. Anglian finance through a third party called Hitachi Capital. This is a classic ploy to break the chain of responsibility between a supplier and a customer. Anglian get fully paid as soon as the work is complete. You then end up paying...
