I’ve just moved this light 4 inches to the left (don’t ask). All the wires used to be in one of those horrible brown round screw terminal jobbies. Now in wagos, but should they by rights also be inside a junction box? Can’t see the point myself, but I’m always keen to do the ‘right’ thing.

I think it's clipped to the fitting - in the top right and bottom left. But anyway, it appears it is removable - in which case I'd suggest doing that.

Normally with a non-earthed metal down-lighter the 240V connection is done away from the fixture. Here with the transformer fixed inside the metal housing and such a short tail, you have no option but to do it inside the fixture, which carries additional risks. I would use some fully enclosed...

I suspect the same looking at the paint pattern in the edges. In which case you'd expect it to have an earthing terminal, as the most risky failure mode here is the live conductor from the incoming supply to the transformer coming loose and touching the metal casing. Regardless of the lamps...

Soffit as in outdoor? If so you'd ideally need some IPX5 or higher rated units. If they are GU5.3 or other 12V LED you'll also need the transformer(s)/LED drivers.

When you leave an unused cable buried in a wall, because it is no longer needed and removing it would be more effort than it's worth - is there any best practice for terminating the ends and labelling it? Or do you just chop it off and forget about it?

Fair point, I had disregarded the Eco7 on the equation for that exact reason. Was assuming it would be run morning and evening as per normal UFH.

Ultimately it's personal preference! I doubt it's going to save you any money, possibly cost you very slightly more, but the feeling of walking around on a heated floor is psychologically very comforting and warming and might be better for you regardless.

I understand the point you are trying to make - but those costs are fixed regardless of the type of work being undertaken, so they naturally fit into the hourly rate. In theory, if a electrician were to only undertake non-notifiable jobs, then they would not need to incur 'competent persons'...

What is under the floor in question? If it's ground-floor concrete you will need a significant layer of insulation to get near the efficiency of the storage heater - as the masonry in the storage heater is radiating it all back out into your room, but the under floor will conduct half of it...

Agreed - but I suspect some electricians factor the costs of their Competent Persons training/membership into their hourly rate, others factor it into a 'fee'.

If there is a new circuit going into the CU then it is notifiable work. I suspect the fee is to cover his self-certification of the installation as a competent person - which means there is no need to actually notify building control.
