    Does this joint look OK?

Thanks, It's hard to describe but previously it has always looked like a more of a curve in the solder between the pipe and joint. Which is also how it appears on the side away from the wall. It's been a few years since I last used a solder joint though so I had lost a bit of confidence.

    Does this joint look OK?

Our hot water tank was replaced about 10 years ago. I discovered recently that there was a weeping joint in the hot water pipe next to the tank. I tried draining the pipe and heating the joint before adding more solder. This reduced the amount of water coming out but it didn't solve the...

    Nest, Hive.............am I missing something?

The biggest advantage I can see is the ability to turn the heating on in advance if you come back to the house earlier than usual. Doing so doesn't save money of course but them most things in life don't save money.

    Leaking Shower Drain

Sorry I wasn't trying to blame the manufacturer. It's definitely the installation which is the issue here. The boss is definitely 40mm. The flex goes into a short length of 40mm pipe where it enters the boss. dilalio, I agree with what you are saying and on my head be it if it goes wrong...

    Leaking Shower Drain

It's the stuff of nightmares. the flex spigots are around 34mm (1 and 1/3 inches). How the manufacturers expected the joint to be made was clearly not passed onto the installers. Upstream it looks like this, including a silicone dam which keeps the silicone submerged. There even appears to be a...

    Leaking Shower Drain

Thanks, I think I'll go for the compression joint option just now and look at getting a plumber to redo the lot if we replace the shower. Anything will be better than what's there at the moment. Edit: I've just taken it apart and the joint from rigid to flex is "made" with silicone and ptfe...

    Leaking Shower Drain

Thanks for the quick replies. It hugely appreciated. I assume it was installed by the same person whose joint burst open causing the original flood. How flexible is 40mm pipe, I assume it will have enough flex to fit without bother? Can you tell from the markings if the left hand pipe is...

    Leaking Shower Drain

We had a major leak from the mains supply to our shower room. A few moths after everything but the floor covering was repaired we started using the shower on a more than occasional basis. We then spotted a new damp patch on the ceiling below. On taking up the floor again we discovered a small...

    Ventilation Pipe Flooded Loft

Thanks for the advice. I managed to wedge the pipe away from the wall and shorten it. I also turned the flexible pipe round so that any condensation will be fed inside the lower section. The top seal was fairly weak so I added some string to stop it vibrating loose. It now looks like this: I...

Best Way to Seal a Fan Vent

Thanks. That's not a bad option although the concertina pipe is the same diameter as the top pipe but I think I can make it fit. Unfortunately it's too short. Before I buy a longer length I thought I would check the other 2 fans in the loft. One of them is fine and the joint is nicely taped...

Best Way to Seal a Fan Vent

This picture shows the fan vent coming through my bathroom ceiling and heading up through the roof: Where that initial white flexible pipe goes into the black pipe there is no sealing which I assume is far from ideal. It means that some of the bathroom ventilation ends up in the loft. I...

    Ventilation Pipe Flooded Loft

Our house is about 20 years old and this is the top of the toilet vent stack where it goes through the roof. I had the misfortune to knock this pipe this evening and 20 years of condensation released itself from the low point of the curve. I'm not sure what the builders were thinking as this is...

Getting an angled valve to point the right way on a towel rail

I think I might try the 55 as I can get it a day sooner, I'm also likely to end up throwing out most of the 577 before I get a chance to use it. Can you clarify do I tighten it all the way and then back off the half turn to where I need it or simply stop when it gets to the right point?

Getting an angled valve to point the right way on a towel rail

Thanks, Looks like Euro car part also sell it and their just round the corner from me. It's not cheap but from what you say you get what you pay for 50ml should also go a long way. I tried the copious quantities of PTFE method and as expected the joint weeped when I added water to the rad.

Getting an angled valve to point the right way on a towel rail

Hi, Can someone help me with a small conundrum I've got fitting a towel rail. I am fitting one of these towel rail elbows (http://www.screwfix.com/p/dual-fuel-towel-rail-elbow/56801) to the bottom corner. However when I tighten it up it is pointing in completely the wrong direction. I have...

Does 1 inch OD pipe accept 25mm fittings?

Thanks for all your help. I headed to a shed with the callipers and guess what... Their pipes measure the same so it is just standard 25mm pipe.

Does 1 inch OD pipe accept 25mm fittings?

Thanks for your replies. The pipe is the normal blue colour the same as the ones you can buy in the sheds. I'll need to find a time to get to a plumbers merchant as I can't find any online at the moment.

Does 1 inch OD pipe accept 25mm fittings?

As the title says my garage is supplied with 1 inch mdpe pipe. This is the outside diameter which I have measured with a set of calipers. I can't find any reference to pipe with a one inch outside diameter and wonder if standard 25mm push fittings will work with it or if the extra 0.4mm will...

    Moving slabs on bounded base

thanks r896neo. In the end I decided to dig most of the retaining curb out as it was only held in place by well compacted earth. I also had to cut a small corner off the final slab but thankfully the Greenhouse's dimensions allowed it to fit the base even with the missing corner.

    Moving slabs on bounded base

I am half way through laying a base for my greenhouse. It is a perimeter of edging slabs laid on a concrete bounded base. The slabs are approximately 900x150x50mm and laid on a mix of between 5:1 and 6:1 sand to cement. Having laid 4 of the eight slabs I have now discovered they are...
